Prospective Politics Major at UCSC

So by the time i transfer in Fall 2012 I will have completed IGETC and prereqs. SC requires you to take 2 lower division politics courses before you declare the major and before you take upper division courses. I have completed all my IGETC and they accept one CC poli course to apply to the lower division requirements.

My question: Will i only be allowed to take one lower division Politics course for Fall '12? If this is the case it seems like a waste of room and board etc.

I am currently a second-year politics major at UCSC, and I know for a fact that there is no limit on how many or what type of politics classes you can take in any single quarter. You will be able to take the other lower division requirement you need, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take another lower division course if you so desire. Additionally, while some upper division politics courses require you to be a declared politics major for priority enrollment only (which means once the priority enrollment period is over, anyone can enroll in the upper division course regardless of declaration status), there is no lower division requirements for the upper division courses. So, for instance, you can take an upper division politics course without having taken any lower divisions should that be the case.

Hope this helped! Please let me know if you want to know anything else about our politics program/department.

Thank you! That is great to hear. I’m also wondering how many units are an average load at a quarter-scheduled school? How many classes do you usually take a quarter? Since I’m on semesters its kind of hard to try to plan my academic strategy.
