My friend’s son recently got accepted to Rutgers. The son lives with his mom and goes to school in PA. His parents are divorced. The mom works in NJ and dad works in NYC. The mom lives in PA and dad lives in NJ.
Anyway, the dad seems to think that since he pays NJ taxes that the kid will automatically be considered an in state student (even though he lives in PA and goes to high school in PA). I’m just wondering what the residency laws are and what Rutgers (or any school for that matter) looks at when they evaluate a student for in state or OOS tuition.
Residency is generally tied to the parents, but it’s best to check each school to learn their rules. Have you checked Rutger’s website? The rules seem pretty straightforward to me.
I think colleges look at where the parents live, how long they’ve lived there, and why. Moving someplace for educational purposes will make you ineligible for in state rates.
Every school is different. In some states, even within the same state different state universities can have different residency rules.
