Freshman: 153
Sophomore: 189 (36 point increase)
Junior: Want 220 (31 point increase)

Hi I was wondering if you think its possible to go from 189 to a 220 in 1 year on the PSAT. When i took it in 9th grade I scored a 153 and i had not studied or knew anything about the test. In 10th grade I scored a 189 and I knew the format of the test but I had not done any practicing. Do you think in one year I could get it up to a 220 with studying and practice tests/booklets? I want to get National Merit Semi-Finalist

145 sophomore –> 216 junior (though just missed NY cutoff)

its very possible, i studied beginning in august before the psat. buy the official blue book from collegeboard and do those tests and understand your mistakes and you’ll be good.

It’s good that you’re taking the initiative now… I got a 175 in my Sophomore year, but after that horrible score I had the motivation to study all summer and into Junior year. It definitely paid off; I made a 44 point improvement (scored a 219 in Junior year, which barely makes the cutoff for my state).

However, the only issue I see here is that you may not be able to make a huge improvement because some of the improvement I made probably came from taking the test a second time; there is usually some sort of improvement that comes about if you take a test more than once. However, you have already done this (you took it in Freshman and Sophomore year). But don’t worry, for one thing a 189 in Sophomore year is a hell of a lot better than the 175 I scored Sophomore year, so if you study you’ll make 220 no problem.
