PSAT 2010 Wednesday Writing Discussion

I don’t think I’ll be emailing them then. If the Japanese actress question was no error, then maybe the Egypt one was no error too. I’m still hoping :D

letmein, what was CB’s reasoning? That while there is a possibly better answer, there’s nothing wrong with the given sentence?

Yeah, baby! Thanks for posting, dude!

That’s false hope; that question had a clear verb tense error.

Bumping this up for people who haven’t heard the news and care.

@ACTTester Argh I agree; the pyramid one was most definitely a tense error. I put no error!
Also, you are welcome.

@314, "After carefully considering your inquiry, my colleagues and I have determined that the question does indeed have a single best error.

Although [best] [known for] her voice-over [work in] Japanese cartoons, actress Kyoko Kishida [also starred] in the bleak 1964 film Woman in the Dunes. [No error]

The correct answer is E.

In your inquiry you raise the possibility that there is an error in A–that the superlative form best known must be changed to the comparative form better known. But while that change is grammatically permissible, it is not grammatically required. Changing best known to better known would not turn an ungrammatical sentence into a grammatical sentence; it would simply turn one grammatical sentence into another grammatical sentence with a different implicit meaning. The use of the superlative form “best known” in this sentence implies a comparison of more than two things: the degree of renown that Kishida received for her voice-over work and the various degrees of renown that she received for all the other things that she did in her life."

Anyway, it goes on and on and on, but I think that’s sufficient. The funny thing is that I put “E”; I guess I just felt like fighting for justice (just kidding…). They also included a page from the test if anyone’s dying to know a specific question…hah.

What do you mean by including a page from the test?

Thank you sososososo much for the update on best/better. It’s wonderful to have a definitive answer, even though it means I was wrong. I’d figured as much already, but it’s also reassuring to know that CB will get back to people like that. What do you think a -1 Writing will be?

^ It wasn’t CB; it was ETS. -1 in Writing will probably be around a 77.

Yes; it was ETS.
@314 They included a copy of the page from the test that had the Japanese actress question.
I agree that -1 will be 77. :(

YES I PUT NO ERROR FOR JAPANESE LADY WOOOOOOOT. loll

I also got a response in the mail from the ETS on the Japanese actress question, and the wording was exactly the same as Letemin’s. I thought they took the time to type it out just for me. ); It was from John Gutglueck.
