the 2012 cut off is 202 if you just got your scores back you will ahve to wait until next year but it is typicaly anywhere form 200-205

202 isn’t the qualifying score for this year (and if it is, we don’t know that for sure yet). However, a 208 is certain to be a commended score.

do colleges see psat scores?

lol and yes, i am happy with that.

Preparation does wonders, especially if you use SAT tests instead of PSAT practice tests.

I got a 214, with the scores coming in today.

I have a question as well. I heard (I don’t remember where) that the National Merit Semifinalist cutoff scores cannot be altered by more than 2 points each year. So if one year it was a 220 for a certain state, it had to be in the range of a 218 to 222 the next year. Does anyone know if this is certain? I mean, I guess it isn’t, since states cutoffs have varied.

[National Merit Scholarships](http://www.collegeplanningsimplified.com/NationalMerit.html) – according to this link my state’s cuttoff last year was 212. So I will be cutting it close (too bad I didn’t get that ambiguous math dog question correct…) Hoping and praying right now that I make it!

I get them later today! I’m so nervous but kind of excited as well :)

amplified - scores can vary by any amount - there is not a 2 point variance rule. The numbers tend to be more stable in states with a large number of test takers and vary more in states with fewer test takers. Cutoffs dropped in every state but 1 last year, so it isn’t the best year to determine if you are “safe” or not. Here are some cutoffs for the past few years:

I know it’s difficult to make predictions but would you anticipate that 215 would make the cutoff in Oklahoma? The highest score I’ve seen in the past 5 years is 209.

mattso, you keep saying things like they are fact. The truth is that no one knows for sure about the Commended or NMSF cutoffs for this year yet.

.
phil–Yes. You can be confident that you will make the cutoff.

Amp–you are likely to make it, but you’ll have to wait and see. The states with 212 scores last year were AZ, CO, KS, and OH. If you look at the history of scores for these states, I’d say that, with a 214, you are most likely “safe” if your home state is AZ. Very likely in KS and OH. But not quite as likely in CO, which has had a cutoff higher than your score in the past. But 5 of the last 6 years’ cutoffs were below your score in CO, so your chances are still very good there.

Is 216 as a sophomore anything to worry about? I want to get semifinalist in MI next year.
68 CR, 76 math, 72 writing.
I didn’t prep at all, so I can probably work the score up a bit.

@karategirl2005 I was worried because I got a 179 my sophomore year, and I barely made the cutoff (I think) for Ohio with some serious studying. Try taking some SAT practice tests from College Board and studying the Princeton Review PSAT prep book.

236!!! Bummed about the math question that missed because I misread it, but still ecstatic with the overall score!

219 California… Don’t think I made the cutoff… but I still was in the 99th percentile. Does this mean anything?

Dammit. Too dumb for state semifinalist.
CR 66
M 68
W 68
Total 202
I hope I’m not kidding myself when I say I might make commended.

I got a 215 sophomore year without much prep and then got a 236 junior year after a lot of prep. If you are starting from a lower baseline, you should be able to jump more than I did.
I went to a prep class at my school for students who had a shot at National Merit based on 10th grade scores. The program involved learning Vocab, doing practice tests, etc. I think it was very worthwhile. The more practice tests you take, the more you will realize that the test is really testing the same basic skills over and over again, albeit in an occasionally tricky way.

So all I can recommend is to take practice tests and understand the ones that you miss! If you do that over and over again your score will improve by leaps and bounds :)

Where are you from, Flower Mound?

Unfortunately for me, my scored only gained 2 points between this year’s test and last year’s test.

Last year I got 193, and this year I got 195. :(

CR:61
Math: 73
Writing: 61

Writing really surprised me because I usually get 70s in writing( I got 690 on the SAT).

CR is my weakness, but I don’t know how to improve it smh.

At least I have 1 more year to prepare :D.

DD earned a 223 in KY! (210 as soph)

CR: 77
M: 69
W:77

I’m usually not the sort to post stuff about tests because i don’t care for those of the standardized variety. I didn’t study at all for the psats and I got a 220, but I live in NJ so it’s a slippery slope, and now that I’m so close to the edge, not expecting to be there at all, I’m really curious as to whether my scores would make it. With the rate in nj dropping to 221 last year I’m hopeful, but it has been as high in the past. Does anybody have any insight on variables like changing NJ population, performance level, grading curve of the PSATs, etc?

GC called (I e-mailed her) with the good news in SoCal this morning. D got 231! Don’t know the breakdown yet, but I guess it doesn’t matter… It’s going to be a very nice holiday (no more stress over this!)…

PSAT Progress:

2010 Frosh 180
2011 Soph 211
2012 Junior 231

BTW, she took the SAT Oct 6th & got:
CR 720 / M 680 / W 700 = 2100
