PSAT curve predictions

…so then what are they based on?

^Probably raw scores converted based on the average raw score, the percentage of people at each raw score, etc. Kinda the same way AP scores are converted to the 5 point scale.

^Oh I see. So it could vary…

Thanks :)

I thought the curves were predetermined.

^Nope. Curves are determined based on student performance, which is unknown until raw scores are calculated.

The PSATs scales are determined in a way similar to SATs, the primary difference being that PSATs do not have non-graded equating sections. Instead, particular questions from previous SATs are re-used on PSATs as is and provide the basis of comparison needed to eliminate student quality as a variable and determine the difficulty of the new test. As with the SAT, the scale will reflect only the difficulty of the test, not the quality or lack thereof of those taking the test.

^Are you saying that the curves are pre-determined?

^No. The performance of the people taking the current test is compared with the performance of other students who took a previous test; the comparison is made using a set of questions which appear identically on the two tests. Obviously, you can’t make this comparison before the new test is administered.

Student quality has to be eliminated as a variable, since an average test could appear to be harder than average if the student group taking the test was weaker than average (or test could appear easier if the group was stronger than average).

I’m a massive ■■■■■, interesting. AND I NEVER CONTRIBUTE ANYTHING CORRECT, yall’ hear?

^^I see what you’re saying.

How is a -7 raw possible?

^The simplest way is to omit 7 questions.

^
Oh, haha. Forgot about omissions.

What do you guys think the worst/best I did was?:

Math: -2 probably, -4 absolute worst.
Writing: -4 probably -7 worst
CR: -6 Probably, -12 worst :(

^
In the best case scenario, including curve…

75 math
71 writing
68 Critical Reading

I got around 222 - is this good?

for writing are you guys sure? i’m positive you can get 1 or 2 wrong and get an 80
what websites did you guys find the curve?

On the SAT you can. Google search PSAT conversion chart or something.

Just get these. [Understanding 2009 PSAT/NMSQT Scores (contains answer key)](<a href=“Store App”>Store App)

These have the curves and they’re free.

With the predicted curves, what do you think my score could be?

Math: -1 or 2 (thought it was easy, maybe I’m wrong)
Reading: -3 or 4 (this was way too hard in my opinion)
Writing: -5 or 6 (not too sure, but it’s always my worst)
