I recently scored a 214 on the PSAT, but, as a resident of Pennsylvania, I am unsure whether this will make me a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist or simply a Commended student. I also scored in the 99th percentile. Does the fact that I'm in the 99th percentile guarantee semi-finalist standing?

In Pennsylvania, the past scores have been:

Class of 2011: 216
Class of 2010: 214
Class of 2009: 213
Class of 2008: 214

So you are right on the border. You’ll find out in either April or September. I can’t remember. But you should definitely make commended if not semi-finalist.

Thanks! I’ll have my fingere crossed

Yup, it’s September. You’ll get the letter in April that you’re one of the 55,000 commended/semi-finalists, but they aren’t going to tell you which.

Son got a 218. Unfortunately, we live in one of a half dozen states that had cutoff scores that are higher than that. Actually, we’re in the state with THE highest cutoff- MA. So, he will probably be commended.
