I thought that the release of scores would be similar to the SAT, where they’re released at 4AM (Central Time), but I’m not sure
Best indicators of doing well in college is high school GPA. IMO they should do away with standardized tests and just use IQ test instead. Lol
@websensation IQ tests are a different type of standardized test, sounds like you’re just a bad test taker.
@websensation Why, cause you’re a noob at standardized testing? Haha loser
Does getting a Stanford letter mean that I most likely scored well on the PSAT?
i would think so but all three of the programs mentioned on that sheet are more based on whether you can pay…
a physical letter or just an email? @PAMom21
@dazedaura ~ We got one in the regular mail. My son used his own email address for testing, so I didn’t receive anything that way. The letter I’m referring to is for their high school program, and reads in part “This year, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Institutes will once again select the finest students from around the world…”. It goes on to mention his outstanding academic achievements, but somehow missed the fact that he has already graduated, and is not qualified for their program. He did make NMS cuts in 2013 (test year). I remember getting the letter at least once in a previous year, maybe twice.
@Hamlon I was really surprised to see them get rid of the Achievement scholarships. While I am generally against racial preferences, given the way the NM program has different cutoff scores for every state works as a sort of affirmative action program for whites and Asians who know how to game the system a little by choosing to live in low-scoring states.
The announcement did say that they were going to forward information of high-scoring minorities to colleges so they could be considered for scholarships. As a practical matter I think most blacks will get as much or more benefit from this. But some of the very generous NM schools which treat NMF like royalty lumped Achievement Scholars into the mix. I don’t see how they can do this without an official designation.
I do think there may have been a bit of a problem with the increasing number of mixed race students who have been raised in mostly white settings. And people are apparently free to claim to be any race they wish. And then there was the problem that being considered for the Achievement Award required the checking of a little box. Apparently some school districts (including my local one) were not explaining the importance of checking the little box. Grrrr.
they have to be lying if CB didnt send scores to colleges/programs. Last year, I got a 189. That score sucks frankly. This year, I prepared hard and used a different email address. I’ve gotten mail/emails from TASP, Harvard, and Stanford. There is no explanation for me to get these emails from last years scores because that means a lot of people would be getting the same emails?
also if this means anythin, im asian so…
@EarlVanDorn But do people really choose to live in states with low cutoffs?
@3scoutsmom Original documents are beyond cool. Totally off the subject, but thought I would share…
I recently found a copy of a letter that my great-great grandfather, an army major, wrote home during the war, in 1862. He included $50 in U.S. Currency, for which he had traded $62.50 in Confederate money. He described the condition of the troops, and expressed the belief that the war would continue unless Lincoln was defeated in 1864, which many in the South hoped and prayed was possible. So a single letter provides information about the currency exchange rate for a particular region on a particular date, the condition and morale of troops of a certain army (good), and an insight into the beliefs and strategy of the secondary officer corp. There is some additional historical information in the letter as well. Of course, there were tens of thousands of such letters.
@fisisk I’m from Mississippi, but lived up north for several years, about a quarter or half mile south of the Ohio River, so I was technically still south of the Mason-Dixon line. When the real estate market came to a standstill there was no real reason for me to be up there. My wife got a job offer that would allow her to live anywhere in the Deep South within 90 miles of a major airport. We spent a lot of time talking about it, and the subject of National Merit cutoff scores did come up.
Also, my daughter flirted with the idea of boarding school and took the SSAT. She scored in the 93rd percentile, which is better than it sounds. Aside from the fact that we really couldn’t afford boarding school, knowing that she would have essentially been ineligible to be a NMSF was also a factor. So again, we took it into consideration.
In the end we did move back to Mississippi, although not to my home town. Another factor for us was that we knew that when the kids applied to colleges a Mississippi address would help, because so few from Mississippi go out of state. So for us, it has been a factor. With that said, I don’t know how my son did on the test. He didn’t really prepare like he should have. He’s got a 34 on the ACT and is shooting for a 35, with a 4.15 grade point, so he’s eligible for some good, automatic merit aid. But I’d like for him to have the NMF status; it just makes things easier.
I just received an answer from College Board to my Tweet:
“The 2016 TASP invites for juniors are based on 2014 sophomore PSAT/NMSQT scores.”
LOL WHAT? I got a 189 last year…that is HORRIBLE! Not even close to national merit or even commended… That doesn’t sound like an honest answer to me…
@dazedaura
I agree it seems implausible, but we should have more evidence after January 7th.
Anyone with 2014 sophomore PSAT over 190 who did NOT receive a TASP invitation?
@Plotinus I took the PSAT for the first time this year as a Junior and received letters/emails from good universities but nothing from TASP. It may be true.
@Plotinus My son made a 194 as a sophomore and did not get the TASP letter or email. He did get Stanford and Colby, and wasn’t there some Harvard summer school or something?
206 last year as a sophomore, no TASP
*I suppose my 63 on writing might explain why I didn’t get the TASP mail… possibly?
I’m sorry for not reading the rest of the thread, but why would TASP use any scores besides those from 2015 to send invites for a summer program in 2016?
