Hey, I'm a rising junior and I was preparing to by some prep books for next year. Before I do, though, I want to know if I just buy an SAT prep book will that allow me to score well on the PSAT/NMSQT as well, or should I buy separate books for the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT. Thanks.

The same book will do alright. The tests are not that different really. The verbal is pretty much identical, a little easier on the PSAT. I don't think the PSAT includes any advanced algebra or statistics like you may find on the SAT (statistics as in the stats you do in algebra, not the statistics class).

Unless you're really going for national merit (in which case you should buy every prep book you can find), don't worry about the PSAT. It's pretty useless. I got a 192 on the PSAT and then 740,720,610 on the real SAT; not a huge difference but shows how silly of a little test it is.

Have you taken a PSAT test previously? At my school, 9th and 10th graders are offered the chance to take the PSAT as a "warm-up". These were great indicators of how well we were expected to do when the test counted for National Merit.

When you register for the PSAT, they should give you a practice booklet. Really, the practice test is very much like the real test in terms of level of difficulty. But go ahead and buy books for the SAT (the more practice the better, eh?), and if you want to use those books to practice, yay. I just bought the Collegeboard SAT prep book.
