I got a 1480/1520, and I live in California. Is that a qualifying score for the National Merit Scholarship?

What are your EBRW and math scores?

Look at the Selection Index. It was 223 last year and expected to be the same this year. (See Compass Prep blog).

730 English, 750 Math

Your SI score is 73*2+75 = 221 which might not be high enough for California (its cut off has been 223 for last year). You are qualified for being commended, I believe.

Above is correct. To calculate your selection index, drop the zeros from your scores. Double the EBRW score and add the math score.
For your score, 73 + 73 + 75 = 221

Yep and that’s National Merit Commended (which is 212 or 213)…unlikely Semifinalist in CA because the Compass Prep blog - which predicts with nearly 100% accuracy, just posted an article today indicating the top states are expected to stay the same (or if anything go up by 1).

rip if i would’ve gotten one more question right, i could have made the cutoff. i just took the biggest L of the year :")

rip my dudes in California and New Jersey may God be with you

@funuggets
Per CollegeBoard website, PSAT results for CA will be available on Dec 12. How were you able to get your results today?

@Polaris1820 the high schools got the scores a week ago and some of them have let their students know (often through Naviance). If you have a Naviance account, log in and see if yours are posted yet.

@washugrad
Thanks

Correction: National Merit Commended score for Class of 2019 is 212 and expected to stay 212 for class of 2020.

Source is Compass Prep blog (Art Sawyer).

You can also get your scores early if you use a VPN from another state where scores were released already. We used a VPN set to Canada, and it worked.

I’m guessing that national merit cutoffs could be a wee bit lower for some states. The 99th percentile starts at 1460 this year, whereas last year it was 1450.
