PSAT results are in

@grrr...heres a link to a page from the college board site which has all the requirements to become a finalist

http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

I scored a 227 compositely (Critical Reading:78 Math:80 Writing:69), I am fairly assured that i scored among the top 9,700 scorers nationally but i lack conclusive enough evidence to verify my qualification as a National Merit Semi-Finalist. I took the test at a Utah Boarding School, but i now reside in Colorado. Would i be contrasted with the students of Utah or with the students of Colorado? Furthermore i am curious about my specific percentiles for the math and critical reading sections (for example, 99.73% vs. just 99%) where would i go about finding such information?

I don't think it is possible to find specific percentiles...

You would be fine regardless where you are in the United States. Your score puts you higher than the highest national cutoff (221-222) shared by MA/DC/Overseas/MD.

I don't think there will ever be "conclusive evidence" until you get your notification in the mail =) but rest assured.

im from arizona and i got a 231 (cr 76, m 77, and w 78)

for details...

How did you find that out? When I went to the hyperlink you listed, that thread doesn't say anything about the 2007 NMSF.

oasis..... I'm not sure, but I think it is your school that notifiies you. I think the school is mailed something. I don't think the students are mailed the notifications.

when do you choose your top choice schools again? they mailed me something, but i think i missed the deadline. waht do i do?

jlauer95, it's in post #202 there. The first link is to the 2006 Official Educator Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT, which includes the schedule for the 2007 Program, including Semifinalist notifications being mailed to principals tomorrow. It also has links to the state cutoffs for 2006/2005, 2005/2004, and 2001.

rivj >>>>2) Monday, September 18 (four weeks from tomorrow): "Notification to principals of Commended Students in the 2007 National Merit Program." The hard part is, you only know if you make Semifinalist if your principal gets mailed something tomorrow and tells you about it. You won't know with certainty that you HAVEN'T made Semifinalist until your principal gets the word a month later that you're in the Commended bucket, and tells you.<<<<

Do they really use the word "Commended"? The Commended students were notified last spring. Wouldn't they use the word "semifinalist"?

My understanding is that of the students who were notified in the spring as being "high scorers", they are either semifinalists or commended students. The names of the semifinalists will be mailed to principals tomorrow. If you don't hear from your school, you are probably a commended student who will get official notification in a month. If you think you are a semifinalist and don't hear in the next few weeks, ask your principal or guidance counselor.

Does my 212 on PSAT stand a chance at being a NMSF? Also I'm black too so...National Achievement gets the same amount of $$$ too right?

It depends what state you're in. In my own state of South Carolina, you'd be right on the borderline, but in places like MA and NY the cutoffs are typically anywhere from 6-10 points higher. I don't know about the National Achievement THingy.

Warpedklown, you just missed last year's cutoff of 214 (your previous posts say that you're from Florida). You will definitely get some National Achievement recognition but it's unlikely that you'll be a National Merit Semifinalist. You will definitely be commended, though. Good job! You still have a shot at merit money. And SAT scores are much more important--those scores bring in the REAL merit scholarships!

I think National Achievement supersedes National Merit for blacks too, like at colleges that offer money to National Merit, that includes National Achievement too...I hope.

The FL state cutoff for the 2006 National Merit Program (high school seniors who graduated in spring 2006) was 215, not 214. The cutoff for Commended (which is a national cutoff, not by state) for the 2007 Program (rising high school seniors) for Commended is 203, up from 202 last year.

For links to the full NMSC calendar and the Semifinalist cutoffs by state for prior years, see post #202 in the "National Merit Cutoff" thread at

officially a semifinalist

oh yes

Principal called us in today..... I made it! Yea!

Oh dear...it looks like my ummm..."proud" mother posted me making NMSF on every PSAT thread... I'm not this vain, believe me, that I think it necessary to make sure everybody on this site knows.
