I feel like I didn’t evolve for letting my PSAT peg me so well.

Junior PSAT: 222
March SAT: 2220
June SAT: 2220
Superscore: 2260 (I’m not sending both scores to any schools, though)

Oh, thanks. I didn’t even know there were awards below NMSF (recognition + commendation)…

I assume that these two colleges should be two ambitious schools or slight reaches as opposed to matches/safeties? Does it even matter much which two schools I choose if I have four or five in my sights?

Just a tip: most Ivys/top tier colleges don’t care at all that you sent them this. The only exception I could think of is Rice, which gives you a fee waiver for its app. Also, I doubt you’ll even be able to anyways, the deadline was like a month ago.
Anyways, best of luck.

PSAT isn’t always all that indicative.

214 psat, 2060 sat in march and 1960 in june…lol, so embarrassing
the sat writing always screws me up. it was my highest section for the psat but my lowest for both my sats.

Stress is a real killer on these tests. :/

Everyone here is saying that they took practice PSATs, where can I find some?

You could always rent PSAT review books from companies such as Princeton Review, Kaplan, or Barron’s from your local library. Or, you could order the Official SAT Review Book from the College Board (“the big blue book” more commonly called). Good luck w/ your studying!

These are great scores to begin with. Remember, the PSAT is just a general indication of your future performance on SAT’s. The percentiles can be a bit misleading. Good idea to take a look at your areas of strength and weakness. Start taking real SAT’s in Junior year and keep testing through fall of Senior year. Once you get your first official SAT you will have a better idea of how you stack up against the competition.

Is there a separate application for the Finalist and Winner stages? or is it the same application?

and what are the key factors in determining if one advances from semifinalist to finalist to winner? does the SAT score matter at all? or is it more grades and courses? or extracurriculars?

I know im already semifinalist but i want to know what i have to do this fall to win.

i think you will get a letter in september telling you what you need to send. go to the national merit website to find out more

So I’m from SC (dumb state) and made a 209 on PSAT - anyone else from SC know their score and any ideas as to whether or not that will cut it for a semifinalist?

@ writingchkkk the practice PSATs used to be available for purchase at the collegeboard website. They would also supply the answer key in a separate cryptic email. But they stopped selling them last year. If you look at amazon or ebay, old copies are likely for sale. I think that they run about $3.50 or so per copy and you would have to see if they also have the answer key available with it.

I got a 209 and i still haven’t received any word on whether i would be commended or not…should i be worried?

209 isn’t high enough for most states, but you can check the list

Usually get a “semi finalist” letter in September - you then complete an application (think it had small essay, letters of recommendation from teachers etc). Almost everyone goes from semi-finalist to finalist status as long as they fulfill all of the NMS requirements (my app was due in mid October). Found out I was a finalist in February, found out I got a scholarship in May, received certificates blah, blah, blah at graduation in June. Pay less for college - yay!

I go to Rensselaer - got a 2170 on PSAT Junior year (you do not want an asterisk next to your selection index as that indicates you are NOT eligible for NMS)
Scored about 150 pts higher on SAT (took it once in Spring of Junior year). Took all of my subject tests my senior year (scored between 750’s and 800’s - I would advise sophomores and Juniors who are taking AP classes to take the subject tests that year. I thought all I needed to apply to colleges were SAT scores and AP test scores. Also cannot emphasize enough the import of AP classes - I received one 4 and six 5’s and basically received a semester of credit.

Would a state’s cutoff differ drastically from one year to the next- ex drop or rise 5/6 points? NC’s cutoff this year is 217 and I got a 211 this year… too much of a difference?

aiyegbeni: It would be highly unlikely that it would change (especially going down) that much in one year. Not sure if it has ever happened. One and two point changes are common. 3 point or more changes in one year are surprising and unusual. (Has anyone seen a change of more than 3 points?)
You won’t make semi-finalist, but you’ll definitely be commended.

atomom

This year a number of states, including AZ, FL and TX, went up 4 points, but I don’t know of any that went down 4 or 5 points.
