PSAT Scores for National Merit Semifinalists 2009 (H.S. Class of 2010)

If you are a semifinalist, do you get a letter now or not till later?

Does every commended student/semi-finalist get a letter? I haven’t gotten one and I got a 231 in NJ.

Anyone who is at least commended should receive a letter from their school. Some schools are quick to distribute them, others take forever to deliver them. As someone said above, you will only be told that you are recognized - you will not find out which level until August/September.

My D1 got her letter Friday 4-17, and it was clear that it was for the top 50,000, commended and up, and the letters for semifinalists will be mailed in September (determined by state). A friend that was a finalist this year also explained it, and you don’t know Finalist until late April/early May of senior year. We are in NM (homeschooled), and her score was 218, so hopefully she will make it all the way.

It seems that schools are slow delivering letters, so hopefully many will be receiving theirs this next week. We got ours at home because we are the school, so that’s probably the speediest. Post when you do get it!

Nmsciencemom, you will find out about semifinalist in late August. At that point there is an application process (application, essay, GPA, school recommendation, SAT score) that determines Finalist status.

I got a 213 which is around where my states cutoff for semifinalist has been over the last several years. on the 14th i asked my counselor if she’d got a top 50,000 letter for me and she said no one from my school made it. could that be right? had anyone even recieved their letters by then?

Are you speaking only about PSAT score for juniors? My daughter took PSAT as a sophmore and she got 199. do you think she is eligible if cut off goes to 199? Or not eligible because she is a sophmore?

Only your PSAT score from your junior year counts towards national merit

Sanchez, your school should have the letter by now. Maybe it hadn’t made it to your counselor’s desk.
Janesl1- Excellent score for your daughter, but sophomores are not eligible. Have her study before next year’s test and try for NMSF.

i was just kind of puzzled because she didnt say that she hadnt recieved a letter yet, she just said that no one had made it. guess ill just ask again tomorrow

For those of you who have gotten your letters, how are you deciding which schools to send the info to?

April 20, 2009- Did you get the letter?

I got my letter today at school. I’m in MD and got a 208, so I’m probably just a commended student. The office called me down out of class to hand me the letter, they didn’t even really seem to know what it was. But I have one question: since we can send the scores to two schools, would it be best to send them to reach schools? I imagine that would at least show the school you’re interested, but would it really do much? I mean, if I were to send it to like an ivy league or something, would it even matter? I imagine a lot of people send their scores to ivy league schools and people who apply there and did not become a commended student are actually in the minority.

got my letter today

207 in TN.

Got mine today! They had it as of last Thursday - the 16th - but I wasn’t in school Thursday or Friday to get it ;)

Has anyone gone through the process before? Is there a rhyme/reason in selecting what 2 schools to send scores to if your student is still in the exploring options stage and undecided on who they want to send them to? what happens when a school gets the notification/report? will this make a difference in scholarship considerations or in acceptance considerations? what does it really mean?

Congratulations! See this thread: “How to Use National Merit Corp. College Plans Reporting Service?”

Got it today!
