PSAT Scores for National Merit Semifinalists 2009 (H.S. Class of 2010)

I just got my letter today at school :).
But I doubt I will advance to semifinalist.

got my letter two days ago  score:211 so probably won’t advance - from TX
(not fair… got 215 last year! and my sat-equiv is much higher than that! seriously hoped for perfect this time, but many stupid mistakes! oh well…)

serendipityyy: some schools are late in delivering their letters. check with your counselor

does a score of 214 in CA get you a letter of any sort? I know it won’t qualify for the main top award or w/e, but everyone else at my school has gotten a letter.

Yes, you should get one for top 50k.

Yeah I got the actual letter that the principal was supposed to receive haha. The cutoff is 201 and it gave me the names of the other students who got it.

Question: what exactly does this do? I understand a bit; I know that i’m in the 50,000 students, and then a portion of those get sectioned off based on their scores again, is that right?

I’m asking because I got a 201 and most likely won’t be making it any further. So was there really any benefit in getting this far at all?

Commended is still a good thing, and you get to have them send letters to two colleges, which always helps.

The principal called and left a message for my son saying to come in for a “very special letter” from the National Merit scholarship people… I was so excited thinking he was a finalists but now I see it’s too soon for that. It just said what everyone else’s did.

I called national merit yesterday wondering why I had not gotten a letter yet and learnt that if you entered the competition by alternative entry (you missed the date of the PSAT and submitted you SAT scores of a later date) you wouldn’t get a letter in april; you have to wait until fall when the semi-finalist are named to be recognized.

So, I’m in Tennessee, and I made a 233. This means I’m semifinalist material, right? Why haven’t I gotten the letter yet? :[
Is it my school’s fault, or should I personally have been notified…?

I got my letter yesterday saying that I was in the top 50000 of all test takers or whatever it said. Also, it said that I would be considered to be a semifinalist or commended person next year. I know that I’ll be commended because I got like the lowest score you could get and still be commended (202) hahah yay!

PS: That whole service that is offered to only the top 50K mentioned in the letter… something about having them call up colleges… advice anyone who knows what I am rambling about!

She said at her school they were holding the letters to give out at an awards ceremony in May. So none of the students at that school have received their letters, and won’t until next month.

Yes, all over the country a 233 clears the bar to be a semifinalist. The letter people are talking about now goes to a broader group of students, and may not be distributed by schools until May.

Did we have to submit anything for this (like SAT scores or anything) or are you automatically in the running if you took the PSAT

For those who are wondering which two schools to notify, I recommend sending the scores to schools that care about demonstrated interest. This is an easy way to let them know that they are on your radar. Lots of schools (like the Ivy’s and top LACs) could not care less about your PSAT scores.

I think Ivies do care about high psat scores if you are from a population who rarely sees high scores.

^No, not really. Or at least only to the extent that they’ll put you on the list to get their mailings. If your SAT scores hold up (as they are likely to) you will of course be an attractive candidate. Note, though that you are probably already on that list if you checked the box to have colleges notified when you originally took the PSAT.

phanatic, I feel your pain. i myself only got a 207 so we’re about the same. expect for me it’s @*&$ Critical Reading. How do you do that stuff? ugh

Lol, unless you live in Nebraska or something you’re probably out of luck :/

I was very sick on PSAT day and got a 201 (Ohio). Does this mean that I still have a shot at Commended?

Hey i got a 223 in Texas, do you think ill be a finalist?
