Psat

I am aware that the PSAT/NMSQT is offered in Tenth grade to those people willing to take it for practice.

Should I take the test? If so, should I practice with the CB blue book (obviously disregarding the essay portion)?

Sure, go ahead and take it. It will be a good introduction to the test and show you your strengths and weaknesses, but frankly, I think prepping for a sophomore year PSAT is overkill. If you think you're in the National Merit range, then study for the Junior year PSAT, but not this one...

Just my opinion.

i have to agree...PSAT sophomore year is simply practice. its good to take it to see where you are but wholly unnecessary to study for...

So I'm supposing that scoring high on the PSAT for my sophomore year will not be very impressive.

Impressive to whom? As a sophomore, you aren't eligible for National Merit status. Sure, Universities will see your scores when you apply two years later, but they really won't be interested...they look at SAT scores and maybe Junior year PSAT scores. I've talked to some college admissions staffers who think an excessive focus on scores is obsessive and they frown upon it a bit...particularly people with already high scores who keep retaking the tests again and again "to get that perfect 800."

I believe there are some advanced pre-college summer study programs that look at early SAT and PSAT scores for admission, so if you're shooting for something like that, good soph PSAT scores might matter. (I don't know any specific programs like that, btw...)

if u do well on the PSAT, good colleges will start sending you loads and loads of stuff. I didn't. :P Glad my mailbox was empty every day
