They do consider people who aren't in the 10%, but you must be strong in a lot of other things. They understand that some their is an inconsistency w/ grades amongst different high schools.

what are some good ECs and other stuff to have on ur resume when you apply for this program?

are they really strict with the act requirement??

from what I've heard, if you don't meet the requirements, they literally throw your application out the window unless you have something else in your application that is really amazing.

i've heard the same thing about this program regarding the strictness of the ACT/SAT scores.

do I have a shot?

mediocre Texas suburban public school with difficult grading system

unweighted GPA - 3.704 (3.74 by end of first semester)

weighted GPA - 3.965 (prob over 4.0 by end of first semester)

ranked 23/513 (top 5 percent)

Scores:
SAT: 720 M, 710 CR, 690 W (will retake and probably get between 2250 and 2350)
212 PSAT (Prob good enough to be a semifinalist in my state)
- soon taking SAT IIs in Math IIC, History, and Literature. (will prob score 800 in math, ~750 in history and lit)

Classes Taken/Taking:
AP Euro/US Hist (3/3)
AP Bio
AP Chem (3)
AP Comp Sci
AP English III (4)
AP English IV
AP Gov/Econ
AP Cal AB (will make a 5 for sure)
Anatomy/Physiology

Extra Curriculars:
Varsity Tennis since freshman year (captain senior year)
Key Club since sophomore year (acquired 100 or so hours)
UIL (academic competition) participant since sophomore year for Science, Math, Number Sense, History (team captain)
Biostatistics Internship
soon possibly doing an internship at Alcon Laboratories
Have traveled to 15 countries and 3 continents

Recommendations:
Definitely a top-notch rec from my english teacher from freshman year.
My family doctor who went to Hopkins will give me an excellent med rec.
Possibly a rec from my buddy with a Ph.D. in biostatistics/biology.

Others:
my family makes less than 50k a year
i have first-generation status
i am half comanche (however, I do not have a tribal enrollment card) and half white

I am dead set on becoming a doctor and surely know far more about medicine than the average applicant. I spend my free time reading medical journals and nonfiction books, all of which I would have no problem incorporating into my essays or interview. Most people find me charming and memorable.
Thanks for your opinion!

You don't necessarily want to get a recommendation from your 9th grade English teacher. For one thing, these programs usually like recommendations from a science teacher, and another thing, even if you feel she knows you well, she hasn't had you as a student since 9th grade, and colleges definitely notice that. No matter what she writes, even if that she is blown away by your medical and scientific knowledge, that you've taught her etc etc, colleges tend to prefer recommendations from teachers who teach you when you are older, and have been teaching higher level classes. Also, some colleges right out tell you online that you should get recommendations from teachers that you had in junior or senior year. Talk on the phone with an admissions officer and they would more than likely recommend a science or math teacher.
Also, do you shadow your family's doctor, or volunteer in his office? If not, no matter what he or she writes, colleges may not think s/he knows you truly that well.

Just some things to think about because recommendations are weighted very heavily. Good Luck

hello, does anyone know what the average ACT score is for this PSU program? Is preference given to applicants who turn in their materials early?

What are my chances for these colleges:

*one last thing, is it a good idea to use my student council vice presidency as a hook?

thanks, be honest everyone

to anyone in the PSU program, when do the applicants hear back regarding the interview?

yeah when do the interview notificatiosn come out?

oh im so nervous about these programs
can someone reply or pm me if they get any interviews. i sent my app in in early october and im still waiting to hear back

also:
in the past 7 years not one single kid has been denied from my highschool to penn state
does that mean i have a pretty good shot at getting into this program?

are u from bucks county

me?
haha no idk what bucks county is
i go to a pretty good prep school in new england, phillips academy (ANDOVER)

phillips acad is a great school
but the fact that no one got rejected from penn state isnt going to help you that much

penn state undergrad itself isnt THAT hard to get into, it's the med program you are concerned about.

when you apply, the school penn state undergrad has to accept you first - which you will def get accepted to it seems
but then from there they forward your app to the med comittee which decides whether or not you get an interview and from there whether or not you get into the medical program
good luck

when do we find out if we got interview?

ivybound
what school or program are u at now?
and waht schools did u apply to/get into?

how many kids get into this program + how hard is it to stay in?

my interview letter is dated january 19, so you'll probably receive it around that date. approximately 60 are accepted out of the 100 or so that are interviewed. and it's not hard to stay in. if you're qualified for the program, you should have no worries.
