@dab3, but won’t every student be bumped into the higher rates also?

@dab3, huh?

If you get enough credits to get you a semester or more ahead you can potentially save a full semester’s tuition by graduating early!

I’ve read in several places that when you reach 59.1 credits the tuition goes up. I can not find out why?

Having credits transferred is a good thing. It will save lots of money by saving you a semester or two. Too many credits coming in as freshman with 40 credits might really be sophomore status.
So, in another semester or so you’ll reach that higher tuition rate.

I can give a reason for the sciences. As you progress into the upper level courses you will be taking more specialized (and expensive) laboratory courses. The need for more labs also explains why tuition is higher in colleges with a science focus.
For other majors, and this also contributes to the increase in science, as you take more upper level courses the class size diminishes. The economies of scale are lost.
Universities don’t do this to make more money, it’s just that upper level classes are more expensive to run and administer.

Having 40 AP credits is great but how many of them can be applied to your degree? My son has 3 credits from APES which are of no use to him. My niece earned 12 credits from AP history classes. She can use 6 of them. AP language classes can earn you 15 - 18 credits but if your major does not have a foreign language requirement they are not helpful for your degree. Some degrees do have general elective classes but lots do not.

Where my daughter attends these unused credits don’t have an impact. At Penn State they can. My son was 1 credit short of being charged the higher tuition amount for his 4th semester and he didn’t have that many AP credits. Having lots of AP credits does not always mean you can graduate early.

Trying to transfer to main campus with a 3.7 gpa my freshman year. Sophomore year 4.0 first semester. I was accepted to Altoona my freshman year and decided not to go. I have 43 credits now, will have 60 at the end of spring semester. Good chance of getting in?

@luvthej - thanks! This makes sense. I asked 4 PSU graduates and not one knew why or had a possible reason why the tuitions increases after 59.1 credits.

does anyone know when scholarships come? how likely it is to get one? my gpa is 3.80 (unweighted) and sat 1980. im not from PA. i got into school of health and human development at university park:) chance me for scholarship?

My status says “a decision will be available as soon as one is made” instead of “in coming days” as many wrote here. Does anyone know the difference? I applied UP and did not choose an alternate campus. Would it appear vulnerable if I request to add an alternate campus now? Any advice? Thanks

“A decision will be available as soon as one is made” - Indefinite wait

Is there any way I can get transferred from Altoona to University Park?

UPDATE : I just sent a letter to the admissions office and they informed that it’s not possible. If that’s the case, can you guys tell me about the advantages and disadvantages of Altoona? My personal subjective problem with studying in Altoona is the fact that it’s located in a rural setting and I was very enthusiastic about enjoying the city life there.

Did u apply for summer@ university park?

Nope. I applied for fall.

@mewaryk- if you would be willing to start in the summer at UP, then call and see if you get in that way at UP.
Many people here were accepted to a branch campus and called or entered summer and got in.
Summer could be booked by now, but try if interested. Summers are very much fun at colleges.

email to admissions@psu.edu

Or call admissions and speak to someone and ask if your application can be reviewed or reconsidered for UP summer.

My only concern is, will doing that jeopardize my admission?
