PSU Class of 2021 Decision Thread

@nitlyn No news is good news, gotta believe that

@msMead Your son’s Stats are strong, but there are no absolutes. Maybe Mech Engineering had a surplus of applicants and it was a space problem-could be, sorry

@strength1108 To be candid 1100 on the SAT is low for PSU/UP. There are people with much higher scores getting denied. I think if that was a 1300 she would have gotten in or at least had a better shot, sorry

@psuug21 Did you apply to Summer as your first choice? If so call them and ask for reevaluation for the fall, that’s what I’m currently doing. Got accepted to summer now asking for Fall.

If you applied for Fall first and summer 2nd then I think your options are limited unless you go with a different major, good luck

The denial did say that Mechanical Engineering had a huge number of applicants. It actually encouraged him to try for the 2+2. I think it was his GPA.

@MSMead I have to agree with you. What was unweighted GPA? High school profile would probably have an impact also, but 1400 on SAT is very good.

His unweighted was 3.6. High School is ranked in the top 30 in PA. Its a really small school, though. Mechanical Engineering is EXTREMELY popular right now so that didn’t help.

@Oneiota I do believe, but it gets harder each day she doesn’t hear. Her friends and classmates have all heard. She applied in September, most of them did not. I do believe she will get in, just hoping we don’t have to wait until 1/31 to find out. I almost want her to stay up each night so she can check at 12:01 am.

@ZPRMOM That is only for sophomore students. PSU does not take transfers in second year. You either go freshman year or you go junior year. That’s it and that is because of space and class availability.

@blong1412 Summer was about 8k with room/board/6 credits. It was well worth it to my daughter though as she feels it was the best thing she ever did. But each family will have to decide that for themselves. It is an extra cost, but with good planning, you could graduate early or have some semesters with only 12 credits to get a better GPA. My daughter added a minor.

@MSMead I have to say that is crazy then. Did he check off summer session? From experience he will want to get Math 140 and Math 141 out of the way. Math 140 over the summer is definitely easier. Unless of course he passed out of it with AP credits.

@MSMead Is Mech Eng controlled? If not, then try to get reevaluated for DUS for UP campus. As an undecided student, all of the general eds can still be taken etc…and then apply when everyone else does before junior year.

Penn State Behrend is the next ‘best’ engineering campus followed by Altoona I think. But with those stats, I feel like a reevaluation into undecided major will get your child into UP campus. Good luck!

After months of impatiently waiting for an Acceptance letter from Penn State, I finally got it!! I was accepted into University Park this morning for Energy Engineering.

Many engineering majors are controlled.

sadly was denied this morning with a 3.57 gpa and 1140 sat. DUS and summer

Around what time of day have you been hearing back? Also do they send you an email or do you need to go to your Penn State application status?

@collegehalo decisions come out every night at midnight. You have to check your portal. They don’t email you to let you know

@dsm2021 sorry to hear that, what was your course rigor like? Did you take many honors/AP classes

Woohoo! I was accepted into Penn States Meteorology Program in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences University Park, Fall Semester

SATs: 1830/2400
Math:640(Old
Reading: 630
New Sat Score translation: 1320

GPA: 86/100
3.2 uw/3.6w
All classes taken at the honors or Ap level (20+)
Highest Math: Calculus and AP Physic 1 and 2
Other Sciences: Bio, Chem, Oceanography, Marine Research Capstone
Essay: Above average but not the best

My school is a vocational school that you need certain academic marks to get into and specializes in Science and Technology. So though my unweighted GPA is low for University Park that is probably why they still accepted me.

Also, I applied Mid October and only got my acceptance today

11 honors classes math up to calc and spanish up to 4:/

@MSMead: Your son has very good stats indeed, so I’m not sure - did he have calculus, all three from bio/chem/physics, 16-20 AP+Honors classes? did he write a statement?
Did he check “summer” and was turned down for it, or did he not indicate interest for summer?
He could call and ask to be reconsidered for DUS and/or summer session, prove his mettle his first year, and declare his major in Engineering nevertheless with everyone else.

@DSM2021: wow, I really thought you had a decent shot with those stats and that course rigor.

@MYOS1634 i know, me too. i really cant believe i didnt get into summer. trying to stay positive though, ill be at main in 2 years…
