@adviceneeded7 At this point, DUS is probably full. You can try to resubmit your application for the liberal arts school but I’m not sure you would get a different outcome, anything after Nov 30 is going to be more difficult for an acceptance. Two years ago my son was accepted summer Smeal with a perfect uw gpa of 4.0 and Sat of 1280. Smeal is the hardest college to get into at Penn State. Altoona is a great campus if you still wanted to do Smeal and the weed out classes are easier. Trying to make that 3.5 gpa for finance is VERY difficult. Good luck to you!
@weareMom I wouldn’t worry. It looks like things started last week and have been picking up this week. There are another 8 days until 1/31. Not much longer. Good luck!
You go about 6 weeks before everyone else and take two classes. Everyone says they have the best time. I am also coming from Southern California but my high school is one of the top in the state so I don’t know if that makes a difference.
@japsmom what do you by full? That no one else will get in or that no one besides the folks that applied before 11/30
@adviceneeded7: you received bad advice, because you had no chance of getting into Smeal “pre admit” with these stats. Smeal is the hardest college to get into straight out of HS, and there’s not even any advantage to that. You should have been told to apply DUS. I’m very sorry.
To gauge your chances…
Are you enrolled in Calculus? Have you reached level 3 or 4 in a foreign language? Do you have 4 years of English at AP/honors level? I may be wrong since you didn’t write your # of Honors/AP’s, but unless your HS weighs AP’s as +.1, it’s likely you took fewer than 10 AP+Honors classes, and your SAT score while good can’t overcome that.
Now, you have several choices:
1° Give up Altoona/Smeal, and ask to be reconsidered for DUS Summer. You’ve already heard your odds are low with that route. But if you’re really interested in Psu UP, that’s an option. It means you ought to have other affordable acceptances already and are willing to go elsewhere since odds are, it won’t work.
2° Give up Altoona/Smeal and give up Smeal entirely, and ask to be reconsidered for the College of Liberal Arts Economics BA or BS (one has more math than the other so it depends how you’re doing in Calc AB right now, or if you’re in Precalculus); you can add a Smeal Business minor. You can try and be a Paterno Fellow Aspirant, taking Honors Economics as well as Honors English/Communication with Schreyer students. If you achieve high grades, you would graduate with a BA/BS in Economics as well as potentially a degree from Schreyer and the Paterno Fellow title. If you didn’t get high grades in those 4 freshman classes you’d still have benefited from small, interactive classes with very strong peers. You CANNOT apply to Smeal from that option. However, the odds are better than with the first option. You could even stack odds in your favor by applying Summer + BA/BS Economics CLA.
3° Stick with the safer way into Smeal and stay with Altoona’s 2+2.
@adviceneeded7 call back and speak with a different counselor. Liberal arts could be an option but then a transfer into smeal would not be doable. You need to determine which you prefer 4 years at up without smeal or 2+2 with…
I’m going through the same thing with similar stats… it’s frustrating because I got into pitt finance but psu up was my dream for a while
No way DUS is full…Majority of decisions have not even gone out yet.
Accepted today after error message/Nittany Lion this morning.
Accepted: DUS with Summer start
GPA: 3.5 W
SAT: 1240
Rank: School does not rank
In State, Private School
Good Essay and ECs
I should have added my son was admitted Fall/UP but can’t seem to edit my post. Sorry!
Good luck to everyone!
@mag6407 Ok my son wasn’t given any guidance and so we had never heard that it was a little easier to transfer to University Park if you did summer session. Actually my son’s middle school/high school where he was for 7th through 11th grade was ranked in the top 2% academically of all high schools within California and two years ago was ranked as one of the best 100 high schools in all of the country by Newsweek Magazine. Sadly it was a charter school and although it had been in existence for seven years, due to a lot of political junk in our city, they did not get the charter renewed and as a result it closedown at the end of his junior year so this year as a senior he now is at a standard public high school in our neighborhood which doesn’t rank very high.
But congrats to you. I am hoping since he did not check before he left for school today there will be something on his portal when he gets home tonight.
@PAHoosier If adviceneeded7 decides to resubmit for DUS, they would be in the after Nov 30 pool. Much harder to get into than the before Nov 30 applicants. That’s why I said it is probably full. There will still be DUS students accepted from the after Nov 30 submissions but I’m sure their stats will be much higher.
@Pennst8r86 Lol. It’s not you. They actually do not have a way to edit. Which sucks. My name is incorrect because I had hit a”q” as the last letter of my name by accident instead of an “a”. My name is Andrea. And when I asked one of the admins how to edit the other day they said there is no way to . Anyway congrats to your son!! We are still waiting for my son to give us any information. We do not know whether he still has not heard as a biology major or if he has and doesn’t want to tell us.
What was your selected major?
Thank you for all your advice, so I am currently taking calculus, I have taken 8 APs/Honors… After thinking about my options I decided to call again and talk to a different counselor who did allow me to be reconsidered as a DUS with the summer option. I know I am interested in economics, but my Finance is what I’d like to major in, so I guess it would be a poor decision to apply as an economics major in the school of Liberal Arts. However I’m still unclear as to wether or not it is feasible to double major in finance and Economics B.S… I do recognize that I my chances of getting admitted as DUS after the people who hear back by January 31st is small, but I can’t see myself giving up on Smeal! As for Altoona, I know I will eventually end up at University Park, but I just can’t accept that as my best option college wise. Penn State is my #1 school, so I’m just going to keep hoping for the best… and continue checking the portal…
@Andreq: this way your usernam is unique!
There is an edit button. it looks like a little cog you could turn, under the number of your post. Like, your last post is #1133. Move your mouse’s arrow to that number: right under it, you should see that little symbol for about 10-15mn. Click on it and edit your post
How did you change your application? Did the counselor do it or did you need to make another mypennstate profile and reapply that way? Also would I receive an answer sooner since this isn’t going to be my first time?
you need to call right away and ask to be reconsidered for … (new major/new campus/ or UP Summer)
@Pennst8r86 I’m on a Facebook page and there is a mom on there that just said that her son was notified also about getting into the meteorology department at Penn State. I thought I would tell you because you two out of all of the threads I’m reading on so many different social media avenues are the only two that have mentioned meteorology.
