PSU Class of 2022 Decision Thread

just got in at 12:30 AM to DUS Summer 2018. Kinda eh cuz wanted to start in the fall. sister goes there and was offered summer admission last year. Not sure if i will attend either way because i plan on not being at the same place as my sister or starting college in the summer. Kind of upsetting since I know people who are way below me getting into fall. anyways guess i should be more appreciative haha

Admitted into UP Engineering just now, but only for the summer session.

GPA:87.72
SAT II: Math II-730
ACT: 32
Class rank: N/A
Several AP and Honors classes w/ a large upward trend in GPA
ECs: Not too many but they are related to my major.

Essays: none
Recommendations: Good (2 rec letters)

@lou4455: ask to be reconsidered for Immunology and infectious disease, or for Biobehavioral Health.
Or perhaps biostatistics? Biochemistry?
What are your HLs? Predicted total?
(Say you’d like to be reconsidered for … Major due to your HLs being…
And it has to match. If bio or chem, isn’t HLs then apply to a major that matches one of them.)

@tgcmom: what APs does she have? Same strategy for applying to a major that relates to her strengths.
Premeds can be any major so if she has lots of 4/5s in a field (social science, for instance) she should apply to that major. She’d have to be able to handle a major and premed pre-reqs anyway.

Biology is very sought after by misguided seniors who think they want to be premeds and has a very low ROI …so they have to limit their intake.

Here we go with the portal errors again!!

@tgcmom They didn’t offer a campus? Just a flat out deny? If she wasn’t even offered her first choice campus, I would call (and expect to wait) and double check. Mistakes are made and I would definitely check. Open with her simple stats and choice of major, her extras are not pertinent.

  • insert teacher/mom voice* --- students, you are off to college, so check yourself. None of this " lower stats than me" garbage. IRL, your stats are not tattoed on your forehead, and comparing yourself to others is always a bad look. EMbrace what you have, who you are, what you can do --- but do let's not be silly.

Why are their so many parents on this forum? Why do they call their daughters and sons by the letters D and S? This is so odd

@nammyohorengekyo , 40k kids on campus. You aren’t likely to see your sister unless you want to. Please count your blessings for being admitted as so many well qualified applicants aren’t. There are two posts on these last two pages from parents whose kids on the surface seemed to have exceeded the admissions requirements and were denied or deferred. I’m sure their kids would gladly take your spot.

S and D are just used as abbreviations. Same as FTG (for the glory) etc. as a mom on here I am here simply because it helps to understand what other parents, students, aunts, uncles, grandparents or whoever is raising the college hopeful are going through. When you care about your kids its hard to watch them worry about these life decisions and sometimes this really helps. I have gotten great advice on here that even living an hour from PSU I haven’t been able to get. Support is great. Above all else I just love my D and if she’s wanting to go to PSU than I will be her biggest supporter however I can.

Thanks for the response MYOS1634. AP classes are history, physics, calculus, biology, psychology

Thanks for your response greenbutton - only a flat out deny.

@GandPhatty this forum is for students, parents and anyone else with an interest in higher education. Most parents have a vested interest (both financially and emotionally) in their kids college choices so it makes sense to share information while navigating the college acceptance process. It’s not at all odd.

The Penn State online portal is down again this morning.

Note to next years applicants who will read this thread. If you aren’t interested in attending summer session, don’t put it as an option. My daughter accepted for summer in 2015 not first choice, but she went because she was willing to go… that’s why she indicated that on applicaton.

Accepted - yesterday for Fall 2018 DUS

SAT: 1280
GPA 3.87 W
Rank: n/a - high school doesn’t do
Other stats: 5 AP and rest honors classes, had part time job since 9th grade, involved in NHS, Student Council (leadership position), rec league soccer, volunteer for younger kids soccer program

Essay: Strong
Teacher recs: assuming strong
Counselor rec: strong
Hook: 2 parent alumni

In state, top rated high school

@Tgcmom I’m beginning to believe that it is all about the major you choose. My son took the advice he read early in this thread and switched from DUS to Communications and found out fairly quickly that he was accepted. He had a very strong application but he was initially concerned his GPA was too low. The use of the SRAR was actually beneficial to him as PSU’s weighting was more generous than our school’s weighting. I hope you are able to resubmit (maybe with a different major?) and see if that helps. If nothing else, she’s got some wonderful other options. Have visited all 3 of those campuses - they are great. Best of luck - this entire college process is not easy.

@lastone03 thank you for your response.

@lastone03 What was the unweighted GPA he went in with?

@lastone03 Hmmm…From reading CC, I thought applying for DUS increased your chance for acceptance. Or maybe that’s just for Smeal.

Still haven’t heard back, application still says it’s under review. Is this bad?

@Jhp1599 which major? My son’s app is still under review for Athletic Training at the College of Health and Human Development.
