@ccs0623 Sorry to hear they are still dragging it out. The only “good” news is it’s still not a no and it’s not a deffered…I’m hoping you get some good news. Ohio State is Pre-nursing year 1. If they apply for Honors and get accepted then they can go direct to nursing. Pretty tough to do though. Has your D heard from anyone else?
Good luck! Keep hope alive! Ha.
My application is still under review, it’s been under review since before winter break. Does anyone think the portal will be updated later today?
@Collegedad33 Yes she has heard from JMU but again that is apply your sophomore year to nursing and is based on Freshman year GPA (kind of scary if you ask me), she got into Quinnipiac Nursing program but does not really want to go there. She got into Xavier with a nice scholarship but is waiting to hear if she was accepted into their nursing program. She has some options but you know kids always want what they can’t have. What other schools is your daughter waiting to hear from?
@rah5720 - we have been under same status for 4 months – based on this thread - looks like “by 1/31” means that the portal will update after midnight. Perhaps it could be end of day update - but they haven’t updated the portal during the day – it’s always been a midnight update. You can expect the system to crash as there will be 50,000 people trying to check their status all at once is my guess! good luck!
EXPERIENCED PARENTS/STUDENTS who have been doing this a while, does anyone know if the 3.55 to 3.97 range is for weighted or UNweighted GPA? I know PSU has their own method to calculate GPA, but it would be nice if prospective students could know in advance if they are even remotely in that range. Sometimes those unweight/weighted spreads can be significant. Does it mean unweighted if they say it’s out of a 4.0 scale? I always assumed the 3.55 - 3.97 meant weighted.
@Sophley unweighted
Unweighted
@ccs0623 and @Collegedad33 Just going to throw something out there. Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame IN has an excellent (non-direct admit) nursing program (BSN). They give tremendous merit money and have co-ex with Notre Dame including classes, sporting events (student section, clubs, etc), ROTC, research etc. The school is small, but my daughter (class of 2017 ) loved being able to be a part of a larger school, across the street. Might be worth a shot. They also have a DNP program. My daughter’s merit aid made the cost comparable to our son’s in state costs. She wasn’t a nursing major but she knew many and they are all employed or in grad school.

@ccs0623
I don’t blame you on worrying about non direct entry nursing programs. I’ve heard horror stories. Obviously it works out for many kids but if there’s a direct entry you take it all day long in my opionion. D got in to PITT and Ohio State. (Sorry to be repetitive) Wait listed at UMASS and PSU. We are in state and didn’t expect UMASS. That was a reach. PSU is surprising. She’s waiting on UCONN and Clemson for nursing. Was thinking of URI As a safety but we heard from PITT real early so there was no point.
Thanks @lastone03 but she wants a big school with big time sports for when she’s not studying.
St. Mary’s would not appeal to her even with Notre Dame there. Thanks for the suggestion though. Much appreciated.
Good luck to everyone still waiting.
@Jhp1599 did you apply directly to the summer session? My D did - she did not apply for Fall with the summer option. But now the portal changed and has her only applying for fall. I’m guessing not a good sign? anyway she’ll know in a day (or 2 or 3). She applied Nov 15 and has been under review since late Nov.
@A1A1A1 Penn State has never been true rolling admissions and their admission website reflects that. They tell you that if you apply with ALL materials in by the end of the day November 30 - then you will get your decision by the end of day January 31st. End of Day can be midnight and for a few stressed out souls in other years it even went to a little after midnight. The people who DON’T hear by tomorrow morning likely did not have a complete application by November 30.
Penn State doesn’t call itself ‘rolling admissions’. They call themselves “modified rolling” which is accurate. I get your frustration. My daughter applied 9/1 three years ago and didn’t hear until January 26 and she went “into review” on September 8! She got in though and it was all worth it!
@Sophley It says out of a 4.0 scale, so unweighted. That’s why lots of people with higher weighted GPA’s but lower unweighted GPA’s are pretty surprised when they don’t get in.
@2kids$$ I don’t think that is true. Smeal is THE hardest school to get into at UP. They accept something like 10%. They do not push their qualified Smeal graduates to commonwealth campuses - there is just not enough room for ALL qualified candidates at UP. As far as going to an “office building”. Many commonwealth campuses are not like that at all. Only a few are that small that they are one building. If he wants a real college feel try Altoona, Harrisburg, Behrend, to name a few. He CAN have it all. The 2+2 is how 60% of ALL Penn State grads start. He can do 2 years at a larger commonwealth and then 2 years at UP and still graduate from Smeal school of business at Penn State which is a great ticket into the world.
My D also applied for the Nursing Program back in September. Still no response yet - everything was in and completed a while ago - well before the deadline. Already has some accepts with scholarships but PSU is her #1 and still waiting on a few others. I’m glad to see we are not the only ones still waiting for Nursing mid day on Jan 31st! Congratulations to all who have received “Accepts” already. Still trying to hang on for a response today - Good Luck to all who are still waiting! Seriously this has been the longest day ever and it’s not over yet!
@ctstudent2018 My daughter did summer a few years ago and LOVED it. It was a great way for her to get acclimated to the big campus and taking college classes. She would tell anyone to do it. It does cost more money but in our case it allowed my daughter the room to take a minor (and change her major a few times!) and still graduate on time.
If I were you, and she really wants Penn State, take the offer and run. So many qualified applicants have been deferred to the 2+2 program because there is just not enough room at UP. If you got summer, count yourself lucky! And the way we looked at it, Penn State was the number 1 choice for my daughter as well - so we decided giving up her #1 school for 6 weeks of classes seemed really short sighted to us. In the end, she was thrilled she went and loves Penn State more than you can imagine.
@Nealthakker The decision waves are as follows per their website
@2kids$$ that does seem surprising with a 4.0. Did he have a strong weighted GPA ? Maybe his academic rigor wasn’t as strong as other students ? Did he have the types of pre-reqs they are looking for - calculus, language, science, etc?
I’m also still under review for nursing
@lucyvanpelt ,@jlhpsu, we were surprised also. The GPA was weighted and had calculus but he didnt have any AP classes, he had a lot of honors and played varsity sports. Still a very good GPA. Being we live 5 miles from a branch , i think he was pushed there. other kids in his HS were also admitted for 2+2 at same branch. We did put this small branch as backup only because they made you do it.
@2kids$$ What was his unweighted GPA. That will likely tell the story. Most Smeal kids have very high rigor including lots of AP classes plus calculus etc…Did he have all of the classes he needed plus a high UW GPA? Varsity sports doesn’t matter at all. It’s all a numbers game and as hard as it may be to accept, his numbers were not in line with other Smeal accepted students. Unless his UW GPA was also very high, in which case I’d call and ask why he was not admitted. But the fact that he took no AP classes shows a lack of rigor that Smeal wants.
As far as being pushed to that branch - Did he put that branch as his backup? If so, he wasn’t pushed. It was his listed back up.
If you applied or in my daughter’s case reapplied before January 31 you could be notified anytime starting February 1 - March 31.
Hey someone please help me figure out this… I am an international student attending a U.S high school. I applied Penn State University Park Nursing by 11/30, and I am sure that I have everything by that time. It turns into “under review” by early Dec. I know international students will hear back from Penn State much later. What I am wondering is is it possible that UP nursing is filled before I even hear my decision?
Good luck to everyone!
