PSU Class of 2022 Decision Thread

@thinkofalogin Noone here really knows what’s full. They can only speculate based on denials. But students are accepted to PSU UP all the way into April, so I have a hard time believing their undecided major is full. That being said, if she went into reconsideration before January 31, it is likely she will hear earlier than March 31. They don’t necessarily go all the way back to the end of the line in my observation. Just behind any priority decisions. Of course, this being Penn State, prepare for the worst as far as decision timeline and hope for the best. My guess is she will hear in February, but that’s just based on past years and no inside information.

A friend of my son’s admitted to Fall 2018 DUS.

GPA: 3.95
SAT: 1380

Had information in on 9/5/2017. Not a surprising admit, but more evidence that admission’s evaluation does seem to be random - or at least not correlated with when materials were submitted.

@jlhpsu Thanks so much for the info! My D does not want to pursue a branch campus. I personally am thankful because I thought UP was way to large of a school for her. She has narrowed her college choices down to JMU or Xavier University which I believe in my heart are a much better fit for her.

Hi MYOS1634 - Thanks for replying. She took IB and has scored a 6 and rest are 5s. Not sure what the GPA would be. I could not find ranking of common wealth anywhere. Which branch campus is best for Computer Science ? She opted for UP only.

Thank you for the info. I also find in hard to believe that DUS is completely full at this point. We’re hoping to be notified in February, after the priority applicants, but we’ll also be prepared for the possibility of notification on the eve of March 31.

Today saw D accepted in Penn state Abington 2+2program psych
OOS
SAT-1240
GPA weighted 3.3
took about 5 AP great extracurriculars. She applied for few Maryland ,GW .Honestly wanted to know how good, how safe is this program.

@Happytoday
Abington is small and has only one dorm (it’s very commuter-based). If you’re instate, it’s okay - roughly like attending a PASSHE school but less residential and with better perspectives after two years. It’s safe (the community, the 2+2) and the campus is pretty. From OOS, it’s not worth it and it’d be pretty lonely due to the high commuter or “suitcase/local” population.

@Happytoday If she’s interested in ending up at UP doing the 2+2 program, I would call and ask for a different commonwealth campus such as Altoona, Harrisburg or Erie. Those are larger campuses (@ 5k students) with several dorms and more of a typical college feel. Not commuter commonwealth like Abington mostly is. The Psych program at UP is very good. But coming from OOS I would just choose a different commonwealth for the first two years.

Agree on Abington. Very small, clears out on weekends and too far from UP to go there on weekends or for football games. Definitely not worth it OOS.

Hi Everyone.
I applied for a cs course at PSU for early decision. It was supposed to come by 31-Jan. But it still says that my application is still under review. Is this a normal thing?

They had to change it to Feb 7 due to not being done with the high volume of appications.

And for anyone to whom this applies, decisions for international students appear to be on a different (later) timeline: https://admissions.psu.edu/info/future/international/deadlines/

@psudude1234 I’m sorry this is the first time I logged on in a few days and am just reading this. My son has taken a total of 17 honors and AP classes since the 9th grade. He took 3 AP classes in the 11th grade: English, US History and Physics. For his senior year he’s taking 3 AP classes: English, Environmental Science and Calculus I AB. He struggled in AP English in the 11th grade which dropped his his GPA a little but I think the rigor of courses and applying as a Food Science major, which apparently isn’t a popular major, is what help my son’s acceptance to UP in the Fall. I hope this helps.

My son applied to UP for business. He got accepted into 2 + 2 program instead. He’s not sure he wants to pursue Penn State at this point. He was looking for a bigger school environment. Can anyone tell me what campus would be the best to start off at if he were to pursue it. We are from NY so obvious he will not commute. We did look at some of the campuses on line but would love to learn more from others who have some more knowledge. We looked at Altoona since its the closest to UP. We also wanted to know how would he transition SMEAL if he did the 2+2. Is one campus more “business major based”? Thank you for any help you can give!

@Mcjc626 Altoona is one of the larger commonwealth campuses along with Harrisburg and Erie. If your son would do the 2+2, I’m not sure it matters that much which school is more ‘business’ as he will be able to take the entry to major requirements at any of them. The entry to major requirements for Smeal at UP are tough so many find that starting at the commonwealth campus is actually extremely helpful in getting the GPA they need. The classes are smaller, professors more readily available and the smaller environment is easier for lots of kids. I have a D at UP, but My son is at Altoona and loves it. PM me if you have any specific questions about Altoona.

@jihpsu thank you for your response. I will definitely PM you if he pursues Altoona. Thank you again

Thanks a lot.

Are the last of the early decision notifications supposed to come out tomorrow? We are awaiting the next round which will start after early decision until March 31.

How do you know if you got into the 2+2?

My daughters application status page changed. There was a letter attached welcoming her to Smeal 2/2 at the Altoona campus.
