PSU--Schreyer Honors College question

I'm a junior right now, but I do have an important question.

My friend recently told me that if you apply to Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, you are bound to that application, much like an ED program. Basically, if you get accepted at Schreyer, you're stuck going there. I've read the websites and other info about this and have not heard ANYTHING like that. Schreyer was one of my big choices for applications next year, but if this is true, I'm not going to apply so my options can be open.

So, I ask you all-knowing CCers, acceptance to Schreyer--binding or not?

Your friend is incorrect. It is not binding.

Thank you! I was 99% sure of that, but she's usually very reliable.

The nice thing about Schreyer is that you get the admissions decision in mid February - much earlier than RD at other schools. But no, it's not binding. They do a few "accepted students" sessions in early Spring. Good program....

How good is the honors program and does it really help you out later?

you should probably post this on the PSU board for more response.
In any case, I am a parent of a Schreyer freshman. It's a good program with many perks and quite a bit of prestige - at least in PA. It's also what you make of it. The opportunities are there for smaller classes, study abroad, increased community with other motivated students, and research. But you need to be motivated and ambitious to make a difference - no matter where you are.
I hear that employers like to "cherry pick" and that Schreyer grads have an excellent record of grad school admissions. Overall, our impression is that is a very high quality program (the new dean is great and they just got a 25 million dollar infusion of cash). You should visit and talk to the students.
