PSU vs. IU vs. UMCP

Hey guys!

So I'm interested in majoring in...
- Business
- Education
- (maybe) International Relations (international anything...)

I have Penn State, IU Bloomington, and Maryland College Park in mind because they are great schools but also cheaper tuition than normal schools (I'm international).

I know Kelley of Bloomington has an outstanding business program...but I see that PSU is a better school overall? I really like IU's campus and stuff but PSU seems like the stronger school? (ranking wise too) I think UMCP is the worst out of the three.

These schools aren't my most considered schools because I'm aiming higher, but if I were to choose from here...which is the best?

Apply to all of them. See where you are admitted. Determine whether any of those places are affordable. Then decide between the ones that remain on your list.

It is too early to choose between these three now.

The three majors you’re interested in are in three different colleges at these universities so you could not pursue them all. You could change your major but getting admitted to the college of education is vastly easier than getting admitted to the business school.
Be aware that Internationals are not allowed to teach in Pennsylvania, not sure about IA and MD but regardless unless you plan on teaching special ed or math, there isn’t much demand right now.)
Also, do you have money? Because none of these schools offers financial aid to international students.

I don’t want to apply to all three because I have other schools that I am applying to…these are just my safeties.

For Business, IU > UMD > PSU.

For anything else, UMD > PSU > IU.

I could find 20 majors where IU>UMD/PSU

Music. Journalism. Social sciences, languages etc etc.

For Biz IU>>UMD=PSU

For International Business (re: “international anything”) the top school is University of South Carolina at Columbia.
You could just decide to apply to two of them.
I disagree with the rankings above. Roughly speaking, Kelley is quite above Smeal which itself is much above Smith. I don’t know your stats but they better be good if you consider Kelley a safety. Even Smeal as a safety would assume excellent stats (3.9/1900-2000).
(Check out USNWR, Businessweek, or WSJ for an idea)

For education, Indiana is slightly about PSu and MD-CP.

I have a hard time seeing how IU is better than anything but business than UMD. It accepts 30% more applicants than UMD and the average SAT scores are lower. UMD is the only one next to a major city (D.C.) so there are more opportunities. UMD and PSU are equal academically, but UMD has better opportunities.

What would your focus be in Education? That is something that is best studied in the country where you expect to work so that you can be certain to cover the specific certification requirements, and so that you can forge the contacts that will get you a job. Find out from your own teachers where they would recommend that you study education so that you can get a job in Korea.

It’s called having better profs in more areas. Who cares how many apps UMd gets.

Not sure if barrons is serious. No way IU is better than UMD overall, or at least in 20 different areas.

How do you justify admissions criteria as being irrelevant?

Give me qualitative data all day long about how lower ranked X school has “better” professors than Y school. I’ll give you a second thought when you present quanitative data.

IU is ranked higher in biosciences, education, music, business, drama, chemistry, sociology, english, history, poli sci, psychology, public policy, non-profit mgt, and journalism. It is also better in multiple foreign languages including French, German and Spanish. See USNews and NRC.

What makes you think UMd is that good in most liberal arts and sciences. They are not. Never have been outside Econ, math, physics and CS.
