Hello, my DD was just accepted into UMD with Honors designation. She applied to college indicating a major that she is truly interested in, but has since also developed a strong interest in psychology, due to an excellent senior year AP Psych class. She now intends to double major.
I have recently noticed that Psychology is a limited enrollment major with 3 gateway courses. This is not a huge deal, but it is a shame that she cannot just directly declare a double major. Is there anyone out there who wished to become a psychology major but was not accepted directly?
All the LEPs have provisions for Internal Transfers and they were all non-competitive, except for Business (and maybe CS, I don’t really know, since it’s a new LEP)
Thanks, @SoofDad ! I honestly never knew that psychology was limited enrollment. Do you know if some of the Gateway courses can be completed over the summer at a Maryland community college (less money)?
To directly answer your question Maryland Community College courses can be used but you have to use the following website to determine which Community Colleges and which courses are acceptable
I still couldn’t figure out from the AP chart how AP credit is related to Gateway requirements. For example, my DD will take the AP Psych and AP Calc AB tests at the end of the year.
A 4 or 5 in AP PSYC will give credit for PSYC100 at UMD provided you get a B- in PSYC221 (this assumes the student is a PSYC major)
It looks like a 4 or 5 in AP CALC AB will give credit for MATH140
Depending on your D’s Orientation date, UMD may the scores
My D started at UMD with 13 credits from AP courses and the Summer after her Freshman year she took some classes at a Community College for credit at UMD
