People on these forums typically put down CAL,UCLA,UCSD because it is relatively easy to transfer into these prestigious schools from a CCC. These schools also do not get enough credit because us news and world report have a private school biased and many people judge schools based on that report. There was an MSNBC study that stated that 80% of the time Ivy league courses are taught by graduate students. Typically for undergraduate learning people just consider the prestige of Institution you went to and not the strength of the major you declare at the school.

Cal has more prestigiousness than UCLA, overall.

But if you're not a prestige whore, choose the school that is better for YOU. YOU in the end have to live with it and take away from the experience.

I'm not worried about prestige, but rather about which program is better for the student overall.

Overall CAL probably has a better psychology program than UCLA but no matter what school you choose you will end up at a great psychology program at ehtier UCLA or Berkeley.

Thats what I'm saying, which program is better for the student overall is going to depend (in part) on which school YOU like better.

ok, thanks

Regarding applying under Econ for Cal: Econ is an impacted major here. So say you apply under Econ and get into the school, you still have to apply directly to the major, and YOU CAN BE REJECTED TO THE MAJOR! It is typically easy to switch majors here, but not when it comes to impacted majors. Just keep that in mind before you check Econ as your major when applying to Cal, as there are still some more hoops you have to go through even after you get into the school itself.

And minors are not offered in either Political Science or Econ. But you can double major =p

http://ls-major.berkeley.edu/majorlist.html
http://ls-major.berkeley.edu/minorlist.html

and as you can see, Sociology is not impacted.

Doesn't the list of impacted majors change every year? By the time we transfer there it might be different, right?

nah... they already designated the impacted majors, as you can see on the list. They don't change during your application process.

OR if you like Politics and Economics and you dont want to double major, you can alway consider PEIS. its kind of a mix between the two and some extra stuff in between.

What is PEIS exactly, and is it offered at both Cal and UCLA?

Political Economies of Industrialized Societies. It is only offered at Berkeley and it is an interdisciplinary study that mixes Political science and Economics. And it also throws in some world studies.

for UCB, my major is set.. i will apply for environmental econ and policy because its micro econ + public policy.

PEIS does require up to level four of a foreign lang proficiency so, for people that also have an interest in econ and poli sci, that is something else to consider
