Psychology Self Study

How much time should I put away for getting a 5 in Psych coming up next May? I want to be completely prepared for self-studying the exam. What book is best?

Thanks

Get Barron's, and if you feel you need a textbook, get Psychology by David G. Myers (7th or 8th edition is best). You should just read the Barron's book cover to cover, and then memorize facts. Then, take the practice tests, and try getting your hands on some released exams from the College Board, and you're definitely going to get a 5. It's not a hard exam at all. I know freshmen who have gotten 5s.

All you need is Barron's and the practice tests in it. I read it the night before, took notes on all of the important/complex things, and then took the 2 practice tests. It's a piece of cake! You really don't need a textbook.

This is a stupid question but how can you self study?

Self-study means taking the exam but not taking the class. A lot of people do it, especially for Psych, since it's the easiest AP exam. A lot people also do it with languages. Sometimes you can take the class online, but more often people just buy review books (like the kind you get at Barnes & Noble or wherever) and study the material and take practice tests on their own.

Ahhh I see, thank you! For Psych, is it easy to get a 5 without taking the class? I was gonna take the class but decided not to because I already had tough AP classes. Also, do colleges respect that you have credits for an AP class that you never even took?

I studied the Barron's book for a total of 5 or 6 hours the week of the exam and got a 5. If you can memorize facts and generally do well with MC questions you'll have no problem.

lindsay: it's just memorization. There is nothing conceptually difficult about it, so if you're reasonably smart, I think you'll be fine. Just set aside a couple of weekends before the exam to go through the Barron's book and take notes. I had three other AP's (granted, only one I acutally needed to study for - Chem), and I got a 5 only studying the night before.

Colleges will accept the credit regardless of whether or not you took the class, so it's definitely worth a try!

Got 4 on Psych and 5 on Bio. Taking bio helps a lot. Took regular psych class in school then read Barron's. Very doable, esp if you're in AP Bio.

Taking bio helps for 10% of the exam. Whether that is a lot is open for debate.
