Psychology+UCLA+IGETC= too good to be true?

<p>Hi whats up? I'm a high school senior going to San Diego Mesa College after I graduate. I am currently in the process of comparing my dream schools of UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSC as my options for transfer. I spent plenty of time on assist.org and believe it or not, all the prereqs for a UCLA psychology transfer are actually included in the IGETC!!!</p>

<p>Is there something I am just not seeing? Berkeley and even Santa Cruz have a few additional courses included as prereqs, but not UCLA? Does this mean I can just go to Mesa, take all my IGETC requirements (plus the other courses that add up to 60 semester units) and get a high GPA (there is no TAG agreement for UCLA)? I know community service and extracurriculars will help too.</p>

<p>I am hoping this is the case. </p>

<p>Am I on the right track here?</p>

<p>Yes, so as long as you complete the IGETC + Pre-requisites you are fine. In this case, you are killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Just get a high GPA – no less than 3.8.</p>

<p>And do TAP, its the UCLA and Berkeley program that is similar to TAG but it doesn’t guarantee you but gives you more priority than a regular transfer student.</p>

<p>Thank you!!!</p>

<p>Hey, I just looked up the TAP; excellent program! However, I don’t really understand when or how to go about becoming a member. Do I need to wait until I enrolled at Mesa College to apply for membership? </p>

<p>Thanks in advance</p>

<p>Complete all the pre-reqs indicated on assist, earn high grades on your courses (4.0 if possible), and you should be fine! I’m transferring to UCLA in the fall for pre-psych and was not a part of TAP/honors program. If you want my stats or have any ?'s, just hit me up! GL!</p>

<p>Hey snguyen84, would you post your stats? I’m currently in community college wanting to transfer as Psych major, but haven’t started TAP. Not really sure if it is as important as everyone says. Thanks for any help.</p>

<p>@Cindylu, sure!</p>

<p>Objective:
[ *] UC/Major GPA: 4.0
[ *] Major Pre-reqs Completed: One course in progress, pre-reqs to be completed at the end of this semester!
[ *] Intended Major: Pre-Psychology
[ *] TAG?: No. TAG, honors program, and TAP are unnecessary and time consuming! No need for these programs if you can maintain a high or 4.0 GPA and are super well-rounded.
[ *] IGETC?: Yes</p>

<p>Subjective:
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): (Club public relations and president of Circle K International, brought the club up from 18-61 dues-members) (Certified youth group leader of a Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth International Organization at church, mentored +30 students ages 5-8.)
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Private French and Algebra tutors in high school, baristo at a local boba shop (haha), and Jr. Assistant Instructor working with kindergartners at a local Kumon Math and Reading Learning Center.
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Circle K International, youth group leader, teacher’s assistant for my church’s religious study program and Vietnamese education program.
[ *] Personal Statement: used extracurriculars (CKI and youth group) to talk about my leadership experience and intended major. Wrote from the heart and had them proofread by a professor!</p>

<p>Other
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: CC
[ *] Ethnicity: Vietnamese
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: < $1,000
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Involvements were related to my intended major/future career. Maintained grades and involvements while facing some problems in family.
[ *] Attending Transfer Admit Day? (if admitted): Yes!</p>

<p>Reflection
[ *] Strengths: Solid GPA, completion of IGETC/pre-reqs, strong extracurricular involvement and leadership experience, and relevant work experience.
[ *] Weaknesses: Essays could’ve used some more editing!
[ *] Why you think you were accepted: GPA, extracurriculars, and leadership experience in school, church, and work!</p>

<p>General Comments:
Keep that GPA as high as you can while participating in as many leadership-training extracurriculars as you can (make yourself stand out as much as possible)! Stay focused, study hard, and have confidence in yourself! Good Luck!!</p>

<p>I also didn’t do honors or TAP and I got into UCLA and Berkeley for psychology. The high GPA (a 3.93 in my case), IGETC, and major prereqs are what count. TAP is great, but you don’t necessarily need it.</p>
