I’ve calculated my financial aid packages plus the scholarships that i’ll be receiving and both schools are affordable and I will not be getting any loans for them…
Considering my major(s): Public Health or Biology and my future career: Epidemiologist. My undergraduates degree doesn’t really matter because it all depends on my Master’s degree program.
However, I want to hear from everyone about this because I want a school where I’ll be success. People tell me I’ll be successful at whichever school I attend but I want to know from strangers about this situation…Which school seems to have a better health program…idk. what do yall think?
I’m also considering:
local life
clubs/activities
school’s size
major
In terms of social life, clubs/activities, etc., both schools are very similar. However, unless there are some specific reasons to go one or the other, a good rule of thumb is to go to the highest ranked school that is affordable.
Here’s some info in case you haven’t already accepted at one school or the other. My daughter has a B.S. in Biology from FSU and is applying to graduate schools now to get an MPH. She is also focused on Epidemiology. As far as FSU vs UF, I don’t think either one has a Public Health major B.S. degree, although USF does. USF is actually the better-regarded university as far as Public Health. They have a large program–ranked in top 30 usually. The Biology degree at FSU is very focused on either pre-med, molecular & genetics or Marine Biology courses, and even the marine biology courses seemed to lessen as the years went on. I think UF may have more course options–check the four year requirements and current courses being offered at both. One thing to consider is that at FSU you can get a SAS certificate after taking four or five statistics courses. If you want to do Epi, you will probably need SAS programming skills. Might as well find out as an undergrad whether you like it or not. To my knowledge, UF doesn’t offer the certificate. Look it up though.
UF’s Public Health Grad school program is ranked 30th in the country. Since a master’s degree is viewed as the “entry level degree”, the combine degree option is nice.
