I'm going to have to agree with wmrocks on this one.

I know you guys are talking about "public ivies," but I think a "Public Ivy League" would include schools that are good both academically and athletically, because after all, the Ivy League is an athletic league. I had trouble narrowing it down to 8 schools, so I thought 10 would be good for an athletic league:

Georgia Tech
Illinois
Michigan
Texas
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UNC
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin

Schools like William & Mary or UCSD are like the "MIT" or "U.Chicago", as in, they could fit in academically with that list, but their athletics are on a different level. I think by taking into consideration both academics and athletics, it would create a fair "Public Ivy League."

UVa average gpa 3.14 and rising

so u believe the ivy league is good at athletics? cornell hockey is on the same level as brown's ? columbia basketball is as good as upenn's?

UVa average gpa 3.14 and rising

WM also appears to be around that level or higher

jeffl, i'm not saying there is parity in the ivy league. i'm saying that for the most part, the schools in the ivy league compete at a similar level in the vast majority of the sports that they participate in.

for someone so smart (I mean, a high GPA at WM) it's shocking how you don't understand my argument. The point isn't that WM is a bad school with bad students but that the concept of one similiar school being better then another is moot. While WM has famous alumni and a large out of state population, it doesn't translate into common knowladge outside the east. This is really subjective but most people in the midwest that I spoke to when I was accepted had not heard of it. As for the 3.2 GPA, I'm unaware of that as well.

Wisconsin has an average GPA of 3.7-3.8 I think, this is unweighted.

At first i thought you guys were talking about the average gpa for being admitted into W&M and I was like a 3.2 and 3.1 would never get you admitted into either W&M and UVA since the average high school GPA for their incoming class is around or above a 4.0. And no transfer, I never thought you were saying W&M is bad or it has bad students...come on...we all know that, is pretty obvious, about half of my freshmen class were their highschools' valedictorians/salutorians. About W&M not being known in the midwest...no offense but you're talking about people in the midwest...and actually we have tons of people from Ohio...go figure.

I'm sure you have some from everywhere. But just because people from Ohio go there doesn't mean that the public has heard of it. It's going to be my word vs yours, so im confident enough that you lack a large national reputation.

Haha...ok...it is not that serious...I'm sure people from all over the world have heard about your school...where do you go again...? hahaha...

I'm not going to dignify that by responding and making others who attend your school look bad by highlighting your immaturity.

And I'm glad you recognize that people from all around the world come to attend the numerous of top 10 problems in both undergrad and graduate studies at my school.

aww...sorry if i offended you...haha...any average student can get into your school...I guess that's good...As I recall you said you went to UW bc of financial reasons therefore you couldn't go to W&M...too bad...:(

Oh i forgot...I'm sure people from all over the universe come to UW to attend the "numerous of top 10 PROBLEMS..."

(As I said...any average Joe goes to UW...)

hahaha

Wow, whoever mentioned SUNY Buffalo needs to take a step back, it's not even close, it's maybe the 4th or 5th best SUNY, and even as a future student of them, I've got to say, the SUNYs aren't that good outside of Binghamton, Geneseo, and maybe Stony Brook

WMRocks, Transfer may not dignify your comment with an answer...but I will. Wisconsin has a better reputation that W&M. That is not to say that it is a better university. W&M is a great school...as is Wisconsin. In academic circles and professional circles, both schools are very highly regarded. But in terms of overall reputation, Wisconsin has the edge.

As I have said a million times...it is not that serious...everyone is entitled to their opinion...I just feel that I'm going to school with students of higher caliber and please don't try to change my mind about it...I just won't...sorry.

Who's trying to change your mind? Has anybody here said that W&M isn't a great university? If I recall, I said that W&M is arguably the best public university at the undergraduate level. But you do have an elitist attitude.

UC Berkeley
Virginia
UCLA
Michigan-AA
UNC-CH
College of W&M
UCSD

In my opinion, those schools pretty much round up the elite publics. This is a college site after all, so I assume we're doing it by undergraduate schools.

wmrocks,
You may be going to school with students of "higher caliber"... but you can't say the same about the faculty and the resources/facilities.

For your info...we just got a new president...the whole campus is being expanded...and the faculty...why is that...please inform me how they are not up to par with other colleges
