A friend of mine just got caught today cheating. He texted other people in the test center answers to some of the math problems, and the test administrator found one of the phones and saw the text.

The kids were told that an irregularity report was sent to the collegeboard, and that they e-mailed all of the text messages to the collegeboard.

Do you know what collegeboard's policy is? I read an article (Kat Cohen: The Truth About Cheating Your Way to Standardized Test Success) saying that they don't really do anything, because it's not their job. They just invalidate the score from that day, and in most cases (all?) they still let you take more SAT's.

Is this probably what will happen? The article referred to a case where kids were caught cheating other ways, but it didn't mention a case where the evidence was concrete, like text messages with answers.

Will it go on his collegeboard score report? With the new score choice could he just pick another date to report?

please help I have to help him get through this.

No, collegeboard cannot sent reports of "cheating" to his colleges.

As they are a private organization, they may choose not to let him retake the test. My guess is the controversy would cause too much trouble - the best they can do without causing problems is just invalidation (as stated by the terms of service).

Actually the phones thing is very smart. They can exchange answers and i think this is the only way you can actually cheat. But you must do it with someone that you trust a lot

he didn't text in the test room, he memorized his answers, went into a bathroom stall, and texted there. Unfortunately, someone he copied the text to left their phone in the bathroom instead of their pocket, and the test administrator saw the text.

do you think they'll just invalidate the scores? he'll be screwed with his school either way, but will he be ok with collegeboard?

(please no "he shouldn't have cheated" posts - thanks)

Only losers get caught cheating, me and my friend(whos a girl) had the exact same tests, and I was able to view her answer sheet, I'm quite sure she got everything on the last section right.

OMG ,first of all no one is crazy enough to send SMSs during the test.Furthermore, you can turn to ''silent mode'' and you won`t hear sounds when clicking.
This is actually the best way to cheat - memorize the answers and send them in the bathroom.I only didnt understand what went wrong ?Some other students told your friend off ?
And since when there are proctors in the bathroom ?

I wouldnt cheat - I prefer to get a 2200 on my own than to get a 2300 by cheating

what happened was, one of the people he copied the text to decided it would be a good idea to hide her phone in the bathroom, because she didn't have a pocket. the test admin happened to go into the bathroom and found the phone, and saw all the text messages.

what do you think will happen? I'm not here to discuss whether it was a good idea, he knows he screwed up and should have never done it.

but will it go on his collegeboard score report? he told me he didn't "free score reports" for colleges, if that even makes a difference

No ,she will have her score cancelled .IN the worst possible scenario she may be banned from taking the test again, and she will take the ACT.BTW,I strongly recommend her to stop thinking about SAT and take the ACT

so, if, in the worst case scenario, they're banned from taking any collegeboard tests again (there were 3 kids involved), then what happens about SAT II's and AP's? also banned?

For those of you who think that you can't cheat on the SATs... You are just naive. There are plenty of ways to cheat on that test. Phones are absolutley the worst way to cheat... especially texting others. Tell your friend he knew the risks when he was texting answers and that he should face the consequences.
