It seems that some students were accepted to the Honors College on Friday. There was no mention one way or the other for honors in my son’s letter. Does anyone know if all Honors decisions have been made at this time? On their website it says honors decisions will be released by the end of February so I wonder if they have rolling decisions for the Honors College or if everyone was notified yesterday.

Edit: The honors college replied to my email that the decisions are being released on a rolling basis until around mid-February

My son’s letter says he was accepted to the college of engineering, but no mention of major. Where does he look to see what major he was accepted under?

All freshman engineering majors at Purdue begin in the First Year Engineering (FYE) program. See the FAQs I’ve linked below.

Thank you! I got confused because others in the thread were referencing specific engineering majors.

No merit for international has been the case for years

Thank you! That is very helpful. My son’s letter said college of engineering so I thought he did not get in the major he applied

Everyone that “gets” into engineer at Purdue starts out FYE (first year engineering ) and then has to apply second semester to their desired engineering program. Some are highly competitive and only have a few spots.

“Why purdue” essay is limited to 150 words. I guess whose who were able to convey their interest in that word limit probably got in.

The Honors College application requires 2 essays of 500-words each. That is plenty of room to demonstrate interest in the school. If you are a high-stats kid and you didn’t apply to the Honors College, the AO may consider that you are not really interested in the school as anything other than a backup.

I see. I haven’t applied to honors, only because I thought it’s more competitive and I can apply it after Freshman year.

My son didn’t apply to Honors because he was overwhelmed by the writing requirements not because he didn’t care. He still got in with high stats and a scholarship. Sadly no honors college, but they should understand not all future engineers can produce these sorts of essays with ease.
I was worried though that his lack of honors application would be taken as a sign of. O interest.

My son did not apply for Honors for the exact same reason. He is a very slow, non-savvy writer. With heavy senior course load, lots of hours of sports and other EC’s. He was already not getting enough sleep working on his common app 650 word personal statement and the 3 required Purdue essays. 2 more 500 word essays was just too much. So he talked about the other great resources and programs offered by Purdue engineering and why FYE is great to explore interests. He also didn’t select a second choice major, not because he doesn’t have another one he is interested, mainly because that would require an additional why major essay.
I too was worried that the lack of Honors application = lack of interest. Not having a second major would mean all or none. So for the past few days we have been looking into how to ask for re-evaluation or just re-apply on 1/15 as an RD candidate with a different major such as physics as now he does have an essay written for another school that talks about his interest in physics.
So relieved it worked out for him this round. We are just happy that he has a first acceptance, not expecting merit anyways.

I completely get the essay fatigue factor. Our OOS kids made very strategic choices regarding which Honors Colleges they applied to (at Purdue and other places) based on how important the school was to them. We viewed them as opportunities to write supplemental essays so the AO would understand that we didn’t consider the school as just a backup.

The CoE says that 96.7% of students got their first choice major last year. Frequently Asked Questions - Office of Future Engineers - Purdue University

Kudos to your kids! Mine took the approach of not writing anything that’s optional. Can’t help it. I figured it’s better doing a good job with the required ones with the limited time, rather than doing a worse job on more essays. The only two optional essays he wrote for one of the colleges were about hobbies, a 100 and a 50 word long ones, that he decided that he could handle:). He to this day still doesn’t claim that he has a dream school / favorite school. Just want to go to the best one he can get in.

That’s really high! And seems to suggest that if students complete the course requirements, they have a very likely chance of their first choice.

How good is the Bio Med major at Purdue…Since most people here talk about Engineering being the top choice. My Son got into Purdue EA, Honors College Bio Med health. IB school overseas but US Citizen.
