Hey i was wondering whether Purdue engg is as good as its written by some ppl for my son. Is it really gd? If not can help me out with a few good universities for engg.
THX!!!

Purdue engineering is excellent. Engineering is primarily what the school is known for.

Purdue engineering is consistently recognized as a top school, especially public school. I know several Purdue engineering grads of various ages from recent grads to middle aged people--all very gainfully employed.

I'm an alum of the state rival school, IU, but would consider permitting my DS to attend Purdue IF he wanted to pursue and engineering career.

A friend's daughter goes to Purdue for engineering. The father is a PhD physicist and helped to winnow down the choices. I'd say it's a good eng school.

Hey thanks that really helps in my decision

There are several schools just as good without the narrow focus of Purdue. Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn State, Texas, UCB come to mind. Also the social scene at PU is marginal as is the town. Outside that it's fine.

My son just applied to Purdue---heard it talked up a lot by his cousins this summer. But, just realized they were all engineering majors. Son wants to major in comp sci. Would anyone know if Purdue were good for science-type majors that aren't engineering? His cousins did say the social scene was fine (& much better than at schools such as Rose-Hulman w/a 70-male, 30-female population..).

My son is looking to do computer engg. I suppose Purdue is a gd option??

Thanks, hotshot. I know comp sci is most often housed in the eng dept of schools (not always, though). Hope there is enough of a similarity to make the comp sci program strong!

Purdue engineering is very strong. If your son is considering engineering, he should definitely have Purdue on his list. Best of luck.

Purdue is a Big Ten university, so it has much more going for it than engineering. It just happens that it is best known for its engineering programs.

I presume you are in Indiana. If you were in another midwestern state you would be asking about another of the big state schools- many excellent choices. Being Big Ten only refers to the athletic conference, not the campus culture et al.

My D is also considering Purdue for Engineering. She is also considering Virginia Tech (state school for us). I'm thinking why go to Purdue since Tech would be a lot less expensive. At one time she was thinking of private engineering school, but I don't see any advantage with them. More and more I thinking we should all stick with our state universities.

Yes, I would put them top 10-15 nationally in computer engineering (I am in computer science).

My brother and I both went in-state for our college education. I went to a private school, he went to a public. Mine actually cost less money since it was more willing to give financial aid and had more merit scholarships.

jessiehl--do you mind if I ask (since you are in the field) if Purdue is also as well-regarded for computer science (my son's intended major)? Thanks for any thoughts!

OP, my H has a coworker who graduated from Purdue not too many years ago. He interned at H's major corporation on and off for a couple years & then was hired into a good engineering job. Internships/co-ops and a good job at the end is all I need to be convinced it's a good program! :)

Several of my son's cousins went there and just loved it -- they mentioned the co-ops, internships and (significantly!) the more well-rounded social life as compared to more technical schools (better male/female ratio).

Jolynne Smith: I would at least put it at top 25 in computer science, possibly higher.

Great, thanks a lot jessiehl! Son applied there and am hoping he has a better shot at admission than at many of the 'really reachy' schools in comp sci he's applied to.

The people in the mid-west are really friendly and nice too, so that's a bonus re: Purdue.

Thanks again!
