@Madison85 I was stupid because I kept on taking all the AP and honors courses I could, so my schedule has been very rigorous throughout high school. I should not have taken so many challenging courses.
You can explain that in one of the essays.
Clearly you are smart with the ACT 33.
Do your best this semester.
Ouch with the grades. Your ACT shows you have the innate ability to do well taking a rigorous schedule. It looks like you didn’t spend the time doing the homework et al. You need to have a stellar semester now to show you can handle the UE engineering (or any other major) workload. Get help with how to study for those classes. UW will see ability but may question you ability to be successful. Prove it. I know my son did not always have A’s because he was bored and didn’t always do the work- but his gpa was a lot higher (test scores slightly better as well). I see several academic activities (some summers) but the bottom line is being able to handle the UW workload.
I think your GPA is going to hurt you.
@88jm19 but how much will it affect my chances?
I’m sorry…I can’t say. There is no published formula concerning admissions.
I only know that my children (a freshman and junior at UIUC) and their friends talk. Their friends in engineering imply that they think GPA and math ACT scores are important, along with any major-related awards and ECs. Your internship and summer programs look good, but I don’t know their rigor…UIUC probably does. They also know some people from high school who didn’t get in to UIUC engineering, but are “smart”. I suggest you look at Naviance. Check the scattergram and see where you fall. Just keep in mind UIUC admits by major…so don’t assume that just because people from your school got admitted with the same or lower GPAs, that you will. It may give you an idea of your chances. Remember CE and EE are majors with higher standards so set your expectations accordingly. Good luck!
Purdue is comparatively easier to get into than most other decent universities. I think you both have a good chance! Good luck!
Your resume is very similar to mine. Tennis, GPA, BPA(4 times state, 1 time nationals, going to state next year to see if I make it again), Volunteering(over 300+ hours). I did not however take the ACT and instead took the SAT. I had a 670 math and 670 reading. I got into Chemical engineering through the review process. You would have had a very good chance if you applied in 2015 as I think your resume is as good or if not better than mine. However I know that they are switching all engineering programs to review next year, so admissions results will look differently. I would say the 2016 engineering admissions will be significantly more competitive. The results would probably mirror UT’s acceptance rates, which are significantly lower than TAMU’s. I personally did not get accepted into UT and as many of my other friends who also had over 2000+ SAT scores. UT cares a lot about your school rank so the higher you are in your class the better the chance. So probably focus on your rank and maybe a good SAT score? I’m not sure. Anyways I’m happy to go to A&M, GIG’ em!

@illini23 Your ACT scores are good but your GPA could hurt you depending on what your class rank is. A&M puts a lot of emphasis on class rank so you really need to be in the top 25% of your class.
@CollegeMama987 What if my school doesn’t do class rank?
@illini23 A&M will assign you a rank. I am not really sure how they do this but you almost have to be in top 25% to have a chance.
@illini23 I would start a new thread titled something like “How is class rank determined if your H.S. doesnt rank” or something like that. Apply early as possible and make sure all your documents are received by the early decision deadline.
I could talk about CS here. If you mean by “directly admitted”, sorry, your chance is slim. All the friends I know who got directly admitted, they all got really strong background in CS, and they will pursue their CS class in junior level in their first year.
Thanks aryat123. I’m going to try to visit Purdue in June and it really seems like a school I would like. Hope it all works out.
A&M is starting to review all engineering applicants. You have good test scores. Find some activities that are related to the major you want to do. Work with circuits, Arduino, learn programming languages, build some programs, and go to competitions. You will be placed into general engineering your first year and then apply to your major. Being in the school right now, the entry to major statistic for Electrical and Computer engineering are not too competitive. But those majors get very difficult as you progress.
Gio123 is correct. I suggest to all incoming freshman going to Texas A&M for engineering majors is to focus on giving themselves a chance to get accepted to Dwight Look College of Engineering. Not specifically a certain major due to the fact that all freshmen will be considered “general engineering students” their freshman year. Focus obviously on strong academic achievement, extra curricular’s and take any opportunity to due STEM Camps and internships or clubs that are specific to your desired major of choice. Take time to write your essay when it comes time to complete your application and definitely get your letters of recommendations.
How they determine your rank is based on information provided by your school along with your transcript. It is called a school profile - ask at the college counselors office. It has facts on it about your particular HS class - TAMU uses that & your transcript to place you.
Application date has changed here for next year for Engineering applicants only! When they say apply early - that means as close to Aug 1st as you can - saw that you’re OOS, you might not be aware of the new deadlines. https://engineering.tamu.edu/easa/areas/recruitment/fall-2017-admissions
