Pro’s and con’s of both? I know they’re both highly ranked…how about social life, competitiveness etc?
Thank you!. BTW, Georgia Tech would be $13,000 more per year.
What major?
Without knowing your major, it’s hard to say how each college would benefit you specifically. However, I applied to both of those schools and was accepted into Georgia Tech’s aerospace engineering program and Purdue’s first year engineering program and the Honors College. Regarding Location, there is not a whole lot around Purdue. It’s in the town of West Lafayette, Indiana, which is about 120 miles from Chicago and 70 miles from Indianapolis. In other words, it’s not a great location for Internships. On the other hand, Georgia Tech’s campus lies in the center of Atlanta and has plenty of job opportunities around it. Even so, Purdue’s campus itself provides the entire town with life and there is no lack of atmosphere when travelling through the town (I got the chance to visit Purdue last July!). While the campus of Georgia Tech is not especially social, the city life around it certainly makes up for this. Regarding their statuses as engineering schools (or for any STEM major), Purdue and Georgia Tech are well-known by employers across the nation and have excellent programs, although Georgia Tech might lead Purdue by a few points. Both are very competitive for engineering-related majors, so I don’t think the $13,000 more per year is worth the academic advantage if all other factors are ignored. Hope this helps!
These are two dissimilar schools.
Purdue is a large university with an engineering department. Most students are there for studies other than stem. 44k students on a large green rural 2600 acre campus. 31k undergraduates. ‘A, B, C’ students. There is a wide variety of students and a wide variety of majors. Similar schools - Texas AM, Penn State.
Georgia Tech is an engineering institute. 80% of the students are there for stem. 21k nerds on a 450 acre green urban campus on midtown Atlanta. 15k undergraduates. ‘A’ students. GT is the only Division 1 stem university. It’s a large version of MIT. Similar schools - MIT, RPI, Carnegie Mellon.
If you rank public schools by SAT scores:
- Georgia Tech
… - Purdue
Social: Purdue
Competitive: Georgia Tech
Weather: Georgia Tech
Diversity: Georgia Tech
Internships: Georgia Tech
Business School: Georgia Tech
Proximity to Florida: Georgia Tech
The resultant degree from either school will earn the same amount of money.
@Greymeer Do you have a source for this list regarding the ranking of public schools by SAT scores?
All very good points, by the way.
Thinking mechanical or electrical engineering.
Good points. Thank you. Proximity to Florida is a bullet point why?
And doesnt the co op program at Purdue make internships fairly easy to come by?
Georgia Tech also has a strong co-op program: http://career.gatech.edu/undergraduate-student/co-op
This is very true.
GA Tech if you can come up with extra $13,000. It ranks higher and is in better location. We visited both last summer and liked its campus much more too.
At GT, first year students are permitted one unrestricted change of major.

At Purdue, first year engineering students must compete for admission to their majors.

Good links, thank you. Visiting next week.
