Purposefully defer ED people..?

Is is true that some colleges purposefully defer some ED students because they know that these students will make it in the RD round?

Who knows. The purposeful defer that I am familiar with is the Courtesy Defer. The school doesn't want to reject the candidate, legacy perhaps, few applicants from that school/state/URM and the college wants to encourage more next year. Doesn't want to offend the applicant's HS counselor.......these are planned defers rather than outright rejections.

hazmat, when an applicant is deferred (out of courtesy), what do you believe is the most common reason for it?

If a deferred applicant has solid (the average for the school) test scores, a strong GPA, and great recommendations, but he/she also has mediocre ECs and maybe above average essays, is there anything this person can do to increase his/her chances during the RD round?

I'm feeling pretty hopeless, and I know the school can't really do anything until they see the RD pool, but I can't really change my ECs or win a bunch of awards :(

KRabble88, I'm in the same situation. I just got deferred from my ED school, and seeing from the admit stats from CC people who applied to that school, I'm marginally above average. Not to show off or anything, it's just that I don't quite understand why I got deferred. My grades and test scores were solid, recs exceptional, ECs just as competitive as other people. Plus..almost half of the ED applicats got in!

Same here, you two. :p
