My school does give out individual ranks but sends colleges a profile in which it has the W GPA ranges by decile. My gpa is .02 below top 10%, top hs in NY. Am I just screwed for hypsm? I have usamo but i guess that doesn't help too much nowadays.

Im in a similar situation (2 ppl away from top 10%), and I’m so low because I transferred into my school sophomore year, which screwed me. I am working my ass of to get into the top decile (I’m the only junior taking 3 APs), and I am also curious about what you asked. Will being at the tippy top of the second decile hurt the application a lot? I’m not interested in HYPS, but I am interested in Hopkins and Tufts, etc.

In regards to your question, the only thing I can say is that can say is HYPS are so selective that it MAY hurt. But you said you go to a top school in NY, which could mask that if your school is truly that good. I have a friend in the Boston area who attends a HS in which the number one export is Harvard. If you go to a school like this, then no worries.

Hope that helps?

At schools like HYPSM, a candidate without a hook is unlikely to get in if they are not in the handful of top kids in their class. Top 10% is just what’s quoted by those ranking and does not mean you have a real shot at those schools being at the bottom of that decile.

At a mid tier ivy, Dartmouth, 40% of those ranked were val or sal last year.

Yeah, but I don’t want to go to an Ivy. How about a school like Hopkins?
