Hello, I am an undergraduate freshmen.
Is having a B- in a course better or q-dropping the class better? What about C+?
A B- is better than a Q. A C+ will depend on what the rest of your transcript looks like. It is not unusual for someone to get a C+ in Calculus for instance.
Actually, the course I mentioned was calculus;;
But I’m in civil engineering major, which focuses more on mathematic/scientific courses than literature-related ones. So, in my case, where the major is civil engineering, does having C+ have that much negative effect?
If you were to Q drop it, what is your plan? Are Engineering students allowed to take it at community college? If not, then you have to take it again next semester. Do you think you can do better next semester?
Are you part of any Engineering organizations where you can talk to upperclassmen about their ability to perform in upper level classes after getting a C+ in Calculus and ability to get internships? They might be able to put your mind at ease.
Are you attending all the discussions and are you going to tutoring at Sanger? There are review sessions before each test and they offer free one on one tutoring as well. You are paying for it whether you use it or not so you should go.
I’m simply asking which one would influence more. I am not all too familiar with q-drop system in college, and I don’t know how much it would affect in future transcript/resume. And yes, I assume I have to take the course again next semester if I drop now.
I don’t know much about how american college works, so I am just trying to know how would each options affect later on, and by that I can plan how I should do about the course.
You only get 6 Q drops. Too many of them on your transcript indicate a problem with your choice of major. One or two show that you made a decision due to some circumstance or another - sickness, bad teacher, etc.
No one can tell you now how it will affect you. If you Q drop it now and make an A the next time you take it, that is probably no big deal. If you Q drop it now and make a C the next time, then you still have to move into the next Calculus which is tougher and now you are without a Q plus you are “behind” a semester. A C may hurt your ability to transfer into another major. Lack of credit for Calculus may hurt your ability to transfer into another major.
UT is filled with people who Q dropped calculus and took it at community college if their major allowed it, people who got a C in Calculus but otherwise have As and Bs, people who made a D or an F and retook it and passed it the second time.
It is a “weed out” class designed to weed out those who are not prepared for tougher higher level math and science.
In my opinion, I would not Q drop it if you can eek out the C+. But I would also try like heck to get the B-.
