Quadrangle Club

Has anyone stayed here recently? I’ve seen mixed reviews online. We are looking for a decent place to stay for one of the Admitted Student events next month, and the Quadrangle Club still has rooms available. According to the front desk person I just spoke with, we are allowed to stay there since we are visiting the campus. The confirmation email that UChicago sent suggests to book rooms at the Palmer House (Hilton) for the April 11/12 event, but they are booked up using the UofC group rate, and I thought the regular rate was a little high. The other Hilton is also really high for these days as well.

I have never stayed there before but it is really close to the Main Quad at 57th and University. Usually it is reserved for University faculty members and so I presume that the room can’t be too shabby. If I were you, I would take the Quadrangle Club reservation assuming the cancellation policy isn’t too stringent. You just can’t beat the location of the Quadrangle Club.

While you are there you can also think of all the greats - both UChicago faculty and visiting writers and scholars - who have spent time under that roof, doodled on napkins in the dining room or exchanged quips in the common room. Bertrand Russell or T.S. Eliot might have slept in the bed you are sleeping in. Whatever the exact nature and dimensions of the room they give you, you really ought to take it and soak up some of that historical ambiance.

You all convinced me! It didn’t even occur to me that famous scholars would have stayed here too. Very cool!

When you stay there - please report back on how you liked it. Can’t beat the location!

Wow, I’ve never even heard of the Quadrangle Club, can’t wait to hear @lilchaz’s review, if they decide to stay there of course.

I would definitely not stay at the Palmer House Hotel. We stayed there one weekend when nothing was going on at the college or in the city and did not have a good experience. I had booked a 2 bedroom, 2 bath room and it was given away before our check-in time. They gave us a one room, one bathroom but still charged us the same price and my son had to sleep on a cot. I’d love to hear how the Quadrangle Club is!

The Loop hotels are trendy and all that, but I’d check out South Loop before hitting the Loop. That’s assuming you can’t find anything decently-priced in HP. I’d rather find something economical and then spend the savings on dining out and area attractions

I have stayed there, great location, rooms are on the small side and feel quaint, like an old style inn. The Hyatt Place in Hyde Park is also a good option, about a 20 minute walk to campus at a brisk pace, and lots of modestly priced restaurants nearby.

Thank you for all of the feedback! I checked the Hyde Park Hyatt Place with the UChicago rate, and it was about $75 more per night. So I went ahead and book the Quadrangle Club. They had a choice of 2 single beds or a suite. You do have to call them to reserve a room. You can inquire about availability through their website, but it appears all bookings are done by phone. The person I spoke with did ask if I was a member, and I said no, we were just visiting and attending the admitted students event. I will let you all know how it goes.

I’d do the Quad Club just for the history of the place. It’s not going to be like a big modern hotel but so what - you can get that anywhere! But you can only get the Quad Club at UChicago. Location is on the 50 yard line for all the activity and you can walk pretty much all over HP from there. You’ll be tired at the end of the day and ready to hit the sack.

I have stayed many times at the Quad Club, most recently this January. While there you feel immersed in the campus life and surroundings. The staff are marvelous; very friendly and caring. The food is terrific. Someone should donate a million $ or so to improve some of the fixtures. For example, I believe the service elevator is the original. The location can’t be beat, whether your visit takes you to the library, the medical center, or Rattner. It is an underappreciated gem. I am hesitant to extol its many virtues for fear it will be more likely to be booked up the next time I want to stay there! It only has 17 guest rooms.

Just a note, when Goldman comes recruiting, the “informational” one on one interviews happen at the Quad Club. If its good enough for Goldman, its good enough for many people…

I got the impression it was restricted to alumni, is that not true?

The recruiters and Goldman reps ARE alumni

Yeah, not what I meant. Can I a mere parent and the bank for a full pay student stay there?

@BrianBoiler ‘can a mere parent and the bank for a full pay student stay there?’

For a minute, I had to stop and think about what you said; ‘and the bank…’ means have the $$$ to afford it, right? Today, I learned I’ve been using ‘Netflix and Chill’ incorrectly - I thought the meaning was watching Netflix and chilling out…as in “what are you doing this weekend?” I’m going to Netflix and Chill"

:))

apparently, I do not understand lingo as well as I thought I did

^^ teenagers are also secretly amused when parents say that, and they probably would not correct parents on the usage, lol.

oh, yeah. I did not get the question.

I know that they are selectively open to members of the public who are non-club members… especially those who are visiting/using UChicago facilities like the Hospitals. One can always call or submit an online note, I suppose, to see if there are any other rules like that.

Yeah Netflix and Chill… I once said, “I dont have a subscription, sorry.”

Yes I called and asked if we were visiting our DD could we stay there and the answer is yes, rates (total) are $206/nt and $216 for suites.
