Quarter grades and Absences

My counselor sent in a 1st and 2nd quarter report card along with my Semester grades, since Amherst asks for them. I have a quick question though. My Mid-Year transcript doesn’t show # of absences, but my report cards do. I don’t have any unexcused absences or tardies, but I do have a lot of excused absences (about 5 I think). With the exception of one day when I was sick, these absences were all for school related activities, such as a field trip, Section cross country meet, days when I go over to the Middle School to teach (for an organization I’m involved in). So, will this many absences look bad, since my report card doesn’t really specify the reasons why I was gone? And would Amherst call and ask my counselor if they were concerned about the number of absences, or would they just toss my application in the reject pile? Thanks

I don't think that 5 is that many excused absences. And I certainly don't think it's enough to have them toss your application in the reject pile, or call your counselor. Even if it was a lot more, I doubt that colleges really look at how many excused absences you have. "Excused" indicates that there was some good reason why you weren't in class.

All the kids applying to the elites are active so have many excused absences. I wouldn't worry about it. My D had more than you, and she's a freshman at Amherst.

ok, thanks for the reassurance. i'm not sure if it specifies that the absences are excused on my report card; it might just say "absences". but either way, I guess 5 isn't too excessive, so I won't worry about it. thanks

Isn't quarter report only for ED people? Or is it for both? Our school doesn't go by quarters... we have 6 week, 6 week, and then semester report card. Hmm... do i just ignore the "quarter report?"

when i emailed the office, they said qtr report was for everyone. but if your school doesn't have it, i guess i'd send an e-mail noting that. Plus, if they really need it, they'd contact you.

Ha, I had many absences my senior year. Visiting colleges. And my guidance counselor recommended that I take time off from school so as to finish my apps. I survived.
