Queen's University (Canada) vs McGill vs Boston U

I am deciding between Boston U, Queens U, McGill and Western Ontario

If you could rank their reputations in the U.S. and provide some info it would be great

I hope Queen's can somewhat compete with McGill's reputation because I really like the school

But Im under the impression that Queen's is unknown in America

Of all of those, I would say McGill has the best rep/name recognition in the States...but I'm from Canada, so I don't exactly have the necessary perspective.

Anyone else on Queen's University???

BU & McGill actually have some similarities. They are both more "urban living" experiences than "traditional college community" experiences. Unless you have financial aid or a scholarship from BU, I don't think it's worth it over McGill.

Queen's has such a low profile in the US that you will surely be explaining what it is and why you went there for the rest of your life in the US. That does not mean it isn't a fantastic school. I've heard from Americans who lived in England that Queen's has the best Canadian reputation in the UK, not McGill. Queen's enrollment has been growing; it might now be 14K undergrads and 17K total (?). Queen's offers classes in a castle in the UK which sounds like an enticing experience.

From Canadians I know now living in the states, it seems their kids want to go to McGill but the parents want them to go to Queen's.

Queen's offers student support, availablity of desired classes, nice facilities, a lot of traditions and spirit (you might not want this), a college town (pop. 100K) in an otherwise remote and scenic area. Very nice campus, on the lake shore. The student ghetto is pretty beat, there are homeless/drug-user people wandering around near that area, and some prisons nearby.

Generally speaking the standard of living is not as high in Canada as in the US. But in the US there is more crime, traffic, litter, vacant city lots, and obnoxious people in a hurry. ;)

I don't know much about Western (another school w/ almost no US visibility) except it's big and there were some CC discussions about a lot of drinking there.

Go to the one that you can afford and is the most comfortable fit, unless the program you want is inferior at that particular school, then look at program quality.

My D liked Queen's better than McGill but is going to Case Western Reserve in Ohio over both of them. She is interested in Cognitive Science as a dual major or minor and, ironically, Case just hired Prof. Donald from Queen's (he has a PhD from McGill) to head up the newly established Cog. Sci. Dept. at CWRU.

Thanks alot...I also applied to Case Western and Im on the waitlist right now (shouldve studied for the SAT)...i think if I want it bad enough I can get them to admit me (send new grades, letters) but im not so sure right now, especially since Im doing liberal arts and Case is mostly an engineer's/medical paradise...Im also not too sure about Clevelend.

Well I havent been to Kingston but I like everything you just described about Queens...I would consider McGill but the entire European-leaning culture/French is iffy with me...Im American and from the South - its parallel universe over there.

i heard McGill has racial discrimination
I am from Ontario Canada
My teacher's daughter is in her first year right now, she is from ontario too, and she says only the quebec students get priority in course selection and she was stuck with watever couse was left. And she couldn't take 3 classes that are required and instead she had to take 3 arts related course, which are useless, b/c she is doing pre-med

I wouldnt be surprised...theres alot of political rivalry between Quebec and Ontario (the leading anglophone province), ontario kids have to have higher avgs etc to be admitted

but RACIAL discrimination?

Never heard of that.

I heard it's just not easy for anyone to get into all the courses they want at McGill; thats one of the advantages of Queen's. Queen's runs a tight ship in comparison and they service their students' needs better. It does seem like McGill makes things harder for Ontario students (like the latest acceptance notification dates) and in turn Ontario people wonder why McGill has such a lofty reputation, esp compared to UofT or Queen's.

aca0260: About Case liberal arts - I read the P r o w l e r guide and the Barron's Guide. They both say the liberal arts side of the school is just as good as the science & engineering, even though it gets little notice - low student-faculty ratio, small classes, lots of faculty interaction, etc. In studentsreview.com the students on that side are happier than the engineers. I'm sure some programs on the LA side are better than others though...you need to look into that. One last thing, a lot of the top students in Canada are trying to get their degree in the US.

McGill is by far the best. If you got in, there should be no questioning. Queens is in the middle of nowhere and not well known at all- it is the same as any other local school- no hype.

McGill has the most US recognition. HOWEVER, it depends on your major IMO. you are going into sciences, or arts go Mcgill. For commerce go Queens or Western

Sucks To BU!
