Interracial dating isn’t common even among straight Yalies … now hooking up… that’s another story, gay or straight. But a sidenote - are you a guy or a girl? All the above comments seem to be about the male gay scene at yale. the girls are a little more underground…

I don’t think that’s accurate… actually i think more often than not, gay dating is interracial. At least among the people i know.

I’ve seen posters on the Yale campus advertising counseling on coming out. I think it’s well understood to be a process that often happens during the college years, and that it can require a lot of support, depending on your family of origin, and their take on things.

This thread has been fascinating, but as a girl, I’m curious about hearing more about the lesbian/bi-girl scene. Anyone…?

Thank you for the responses! They have all been very helpful. Also, with the suite-style living and hook-up scenes, are there any issues over privacy and such? Along with the interracial topic, what race pairs are common? I know that in the gay community, especially the male side, white is considered beautiful, ethnic not so much. Is this pseudo-racism especially noticeable?

with gay guys, all race pairings are pretty common. as long you’re attractive, you’ll find someone to hook up with or date. actually, you don’t even have to be that attractive. as for lesbians, well yeah they are underground. they’re not as…out and about as the gay guys i.e. hooking up at parties (well not that i’ve seen). probably because they are fewer of them. but they have a very strong community with each other. and i find it’s not really a defining feature for them if that makes sense. for instance, say adam is gay, when you’re describing him to another person you’d say something like, you know adam, he’s in TD, brown hair, he’s gay, ect. if it was a girl, you’d say you know, kim she’s in stiles, she’s on the field hockey team, she’s in DS, she’s from florida ect but you wouldn’t even mention that fact she’s a lesbian. at least, this is from my experience. gay guys are defined more by their sexuality because i guess there’s just so many of them. lesbians aren’t really as out. well my 2 cents.

Thank you guys for the responses. Anymore thoughts? What other colleges offer a similar liberal, all-accepting environment? Is Yale more of a relationship/dating or hookup kind of school?

Not a current undergrad, but in my days there were plenty of hookups and plenty of steady relationships.
