Questbridge Financial Selection Criteria

Hello everyone, I am new to CC and would like to ask a question. Now, I've emailed Questbridge about this before, and the only thing they did was point me to the selection criteria (which I had referenced in my email, so they were absolutely of zero help). I figured it would then be better to ask here. My question pertains to my family's financial situation, and whether or not I should bother applying to Questbridge.

I am a student living in New England, in the suburbs. While it's not exactly the most affluent suburb/county, people live quite comfortably here, which worries me because from the stats I've seen in the finalist stats threads I don't come close. I will try to describe my situation to the best of my ability, but from some angles it looks kind of like a pity-seeking, attention thing. By no means am I looking for that. Just an honest appraisal.

I live in a household of three (I'm an only child with my mother and father), and our household income is around 67,000 before taxes, and 59,000 after taxes. However, our family pays around 10,000-13,000 to our relatives (aunt and grandmother) overseas to help pay for their living expenses (medical bills, elderly home, etc.). We only have average assets (one house, and several thousand (half of it is mine) in the stock market). The house is worth around 300,000, with 84,000 on the mortgage.

My father was laid-off several years ago, but is still collecting unemployed benefits. I do not have this information yet. My mom works two jobs, one full-time and one part-time on Saturdays. I worked over the summer for around 2-3 months (can't exactly remember my start date) to help pay some of our living expenses, but I have since quit to concentrate on school. I wouldn't say that we live in significant financial hardship, but we have a relatively humble lifestyle compared to many of our neighbors and the rest of the town.

I’m not an expert on the subject, but you may have a shot. I mean, it can’t hurt to try. Your parents make around the high end of people accepted, if I remember correctly. But you guys also dedicate almost 1/5 of that to your family overseas. The fact that your mother has to work 2 jobs and you had to help out shows that you’ve had a little financial difficulty. From the sounds of it, paying for college is going to be rough. I say give it a shot; you’ve got nothing to lose. It can only help.
Good luck. =)

Yeah, I went over it with my guidance counselor, and it wouldn’t hurt to try. Besides, I’ll get all my college stuff done earlier, hear back earlier, and hopefully, be secure earlier… But enough hoping. I’m gonna go get started. Got a lot to do…
