Questbridge question?

Hi everyone, I just had a quick question about the Questbridge Match scholarship that I wondered if anyone could provide some insight to. I am applying to the scholarship this year. My family's income (technically my mother's) is relatively high at this point (with child support, it is around $77,000). I know that is much higher than the $60,000 that is generally the cut off for Questbridge. However, this is only recent in the past 2 and half years, where she was finally employed. We lived on $15,000 to $20,000 for the majority of my life. My father was unemployed as well and didn't begin paying child support until recently. In fact, when my mother was in school, she had to take out a student loan for us to live on even after she'd earned a full scholarship. My father is also in extreme debt and is in no position to help pay for college. Because my mother only recently began to earn a real income, we have no savings and I have no way to pay for college unless I also take out huge loans. We've explained all of this in the extenuating circumstances of the form, but do you guys think that I have even a remote chance of getting the scholarship? We may make a decent income now, but it hasn't been the case for many years and I was more than qualified only two years ago. Any insight on this would be HUGELY appreciated :) Thank you!!
ps- My stats are relatively on par with finalists.

I am quite anxious about this considering the application is due this week- I want to know whether I should spend time honing my application or instead focus on my common app. Please respond if you have an idea. Thank you.

Focus on the QB app that is due now. You have time later to work on the common app. The QB app IS your application to many schools (plus supplementals).

I don’t mean to be pushy or drag information out of you that you aren’t sure of, but based on the (admittedly brief… It goes on, haha) financial picture I described, do you think I have a shot?

Yes… particularly if you explain the situation. It will also somewhat be factored in where you live (77k is poor in NYC, but may be rich in Podunk, ID :-)). Do you have siblings in the house?

Haha yes- I am from New York but moved to Michigan for my mom to get the job! Quite different :stuck_out_tongue: I have a younger brother. He’s fourteen. I am also URM (Hispanic), and my mom has been working to write a good narrative that fits in the 400 character box.

Your mom shouldn’t be writing any of your app.

She isn’t writing the application, simply dealing with the numbers (taxes, etc). sorry for the confusion!

Adriana, I agree with crazymom, even for the additional info part or the narratives about your finances, you should try to write it yourself. I actually went through this w my D for the college prep scholarship; I thought it would be easier for me to just deal with the finances but sitting down and going over everything with her and then letting her tell the story both with words and numbers was essential. Of course I checked the numbers before she submitted, but this is her application and she owns this process. One of the great thing about QB NCM is that while there is no family contribution (usually), there is a student expectation…because you are really ‘writing your own ticket’…I’m watching a lot of kids who have already overcome obstacles grow up in really good ways being involved with Questbridge, even before they get accepted to college!
