question 5, World History???

Hi,

I take a look at the CollegeBoard's SAT II preparation booklet, and find this question, accompanied by a picture. That is the question 5, World History.

The bronze plaque shown above was
created in
(A) Italy
(B) Central Asia
(C) Arabia
(D) West Africa
(E) China

Can you explain this question for me? I don't understand its answer.

I want to guess A, Italy, if only because of Lorenzo Ghiberti's Bronze "Gates of Paradise" in Florence.

What does the plaque look like? Is it ancient?

No (D) West Africa is the answer. Do you know why, kwu?

The people in it look more West African than anything.

The inclusion of "bronze" is probably a significant detail.

I've yet to come across a SAT II WH question with a picture of a sculpture whose answer wasn't somewhere in Africa. Two things that might tip you off

The "tribal" element to the art. You can tell this pretty easily.

Bronze work. Africa is notable for its work with bronze.

No, kindhearted, my specialty lies within the History of Art, not World History.

Also, refer to jamesford's post.
This information is probably readily available in prep books.

I think the Hyksos were the first to introduce bronze in Africa in the Middle Kingdom. 9 times out of 10, such questions either represent African or Greek/Roman art, here my best educated guess would be Africa.
