Question About Admissions

I have applied to Cal Poly for the Freshman Undergraduate 2011 Fall Semester. I have not recieved any indication weather I have been accepted or not. I read that the decisions should come sometime in Mid Febuary and am concerned about weather or not I have made it. I have applied under the Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering Degree. I sent my application in on 10/02/10. Does this mean I have a higher chance of not being accepted?

My current stats are:

Weighted GPA: 2.91
ACT Score: 23
SAT Score: 1530/2400

I know it is a bit of a long shot to get into Cal Poly but in my Senior year in High school my GPA is over 3.6 and I am taking a class at my local community college to try and get ahead. Is there any chance of me getting into Poly? Also if I get in I would want to transfer into Mechanical Engineering. I am no longer interested in the Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering Degree. Would this be remotely possible?

Edit: I live in state so the requirements might be less for me.

Sorry, I don’t think you have much of a chance. Your gpa is sub 3.0 is like the bare minimum to get in provided you have high test scores. However, your ACT/SAT are around average as well.

and no, in state does not make “requirements” less for you. In fact, being out of state will help you get in.

Looks like I have to go to COS for a couple years then :(. Is it possible to get into Cal Poly without spending two years in the CCC system? Can I just take a year of engineering and math courses and transfer in?

after only one year of community college they are still going to look at your high school grades which might hurt you

This doesn’t paint a very bright future for me.

I suggest you take your time and make sure you have a high CC gpa. Transferring into Cal Poly isn’t exactly a walk in the park either.

Yea well I was hoping I wouldn’t have to deal with that. I’m dissapointed that I don’t have a chance at all.

Don’t say you have no chance at all. It’s an amazingly strange process about who gets in and who doesn’t. While you don’t have fabulous chances, you do have some. Everybody does. Good luck (:

We will see.

Just remember that a lot of kids are going to be ‘rejected’, even lots with very good grades. It is a very competitive school, especially for certain majors.

What are your other options for school?

If you get in, switching to Mechanical Engineering will not be an option in all likelihood.

Check out this recent thread regarding this:

I hope you submitted applications for other CSU’s or UC’s as you never know… best not to have your eggs all in one basket. I had my son applied to two UC’s and four CSU’s for Mechanical Engineering: UCB, UCD, Cal Poly, Pomona, Chico, and San Jose. He’s been accepted to UCD, Chico, and San Jose… still waiting on Pomona, UCB, and Cal Poly.

The thing is though, they are both engineering majors. Doesn’t that help in that regard?

On another note, is it possible or even realistic to get my general education done at Fresno State and then finish my degree at Cal Poly? I think that Fresno State might be able to give me a better education then COS.

My other options for school are Fresno state where I am already accepted. I have not heard back from UC Merced. COS is another option that I want to use as my last resort. My main goal is to get the best Mechanical Engineering Education that I can get.

You should read the thread I posted above.

Also, Read this link below carefully. At the bottom are links to each Engineering department.

So what I am reading is that I need to have good grades in the major I applied to and at least one quarter into the major. I also cannot transfer back out of it. Is this correct? That is fine, I will do anything to get what I want.

This will give you an idea of the GPA’s and SAT scores for each of the Colleges at Cal Poly.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the hardest departments to get into. Transfering into it is just as hard. If you do get in, you will have to do a whole heck of a lot better to get into ME. A 3.6 GPA for your WHOLE HS career probably isn’t high enough to get into the ME department. Also realize that most student’s GPAs will be lower in college than in high school.

But Cal Poly isn’t the only place that has ME. If you really want it as a career, go to where you do get in; do well and you’ll get there.

The reason I do want to get in is because it is so hard. I want the best education I can get period. I realize I can just go to Fresno for four years and get the same degree but that would be taking it easy.

why don’t you get your B.S in mechanical engineering at Fresno state then get a Masters in mechanical engineering at Cal Poly?

From what I hear, it’d be harder to transfer here from Fresno than from a JC. Either way, it’s super hard to transfer in as an ME student. My boyfriend is an ME major, his HS GPA wasn’t stellar, but he scored perfect on the Math II SAT and 2250 SAT. Good luck though! :)
