question about application

would it be to my detriment to list "undecided" as my major? I really don't know exactly what i want to do yet, and i hear it's very flexible at hopkins (i.e. you can experiment, take different courses, and decide what appeals to you, because you don't have to declare a major until sophomore year). However, I'm afraid that listing "undecided" might give the admissions committee the impression that I have no direction or I'm not serious...any thoughts?

I believe I heard somewhere that many pre-med majors put down "undecided" to NOT give off the impression that they were going pre-med...it may give a bad impression in that sense.

Since you don't have to decide until Sophmore year anyway, why don't you just put down something you have a bit of interest in? Then your worries of "no direction/not serious" are over...no?

Listing "undecided" will in no way have a detrimental effect on your admission. You are absolutely right that the curriculum at Hopkins is flexible and that you will have time to explore.

One suggestion -- as you will see we have a general undecided for Arts and Sciences, and then also undecided options in Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering, and Natural Sciences. You might want to choose one of those "area" undecided (or maybe two) to let the Admissions committee know what area of study you are thinking about.

thank you for your help!
