Right now I'm a student at a Calfornia Community College. I decided to stay at CC for another year so I can have a chance to apply to UCLA (I couldn't apply for Fall 2008 because I didn't have enough units). My current GPA isn't that great. It is 3.05. I had the worst first year at Community College. My grades are 5 A's, 2 B's, 1 C and 1 F.

The F is in an architectural design class that I took on a whim because I was interested. It turns out that this class was the most difficult architecture class (no one advised me that I had to take the intro to acrchitecture classes before taking this one) and it being my first architecture class, I couldn't understand the concepts and the teacher failed me.

Taking the class again is a last resort because I don't know if I can make room in my schedule for it (I have to complete 5 honors classes and the pre-req's for English) and its only offered in the spring so the F will still be on my transcript when I apply.

I'm working hard this semester to raise my GPA before I apply this November. I am so determined to raise my GPA and I am willing to do everything and anything I can to accomplish my goals.
I am also planning to join the Honors Program (TAP) and join the honor society Alpha Gamma Sigma. I was also a member of the Student Goverment. Currently I tutor English 6 hrs/week on the side (I am an English major)
If I successfully complete the Honors program and raise my GPA to at least a 3.5 will they look past the F? Or am I doomed?

And imo, u should really do something about that F... I don't think they will look past it.
You know what they say... small mistakes can be catastrophic...

I've seen this post several times and I can now tell you, do TAP and don't get anything lower than an 'A' (easily said, but easily done? maybe).

Go to your graduation office (or admissions, whatever it's called for you) and ask them if there is anyway you can drop that F from your transcript (my school has a policy where you can drop ONE grade of a D or below, but 2 years must pass since you've acquired said grade).

Or retake the class and remember what you're in for. I don't see how you could take it, if it was that difficult, without having to take a pre-req.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Yes, my major is English.

I'm strongly considering re-taking that class. I admitt that it was a huge mistake on my part for not dropping it when i was starting to struggle. Seems like re-taking it is my only option here.
One huge problem is that the class is only offered in the Spring so the F will still appear on my transcript when I apply this fall. Will that affect my chances?

I think retaking it is a good idea. Can you retake it at a different cc before the spring? Honestly, 3.3 is fairly low and when the waiting period starts you'll wish you'd done all that you could have to be a competitive candidate.

That said, if you can't retake it then be sure to address that F in the essay in a way that shows you've learned something from it.

Infortunately the class does transfer, but it's not on the IGETC. I don't know if that makes any difference.
I'll see if the class is offered at another CC in my area. Thanks for the idea

The professor cut a deal with my last summer and gave me some assignments to work on and said that he would change my grade. Unfortunately I was taking 2 summer classes and got caught up in the laziness after that, so I only did a few of the assignments he gave me and just gave up. I know... stupid decision on my part.

If I re-take the class I'm sure he will try to help me out and I will definitely pass the class with a C or better. I'm not worried about that

I am surprised the class transfers- i have never even seen an architecture class in any CC in my area and i went to 3 different districts and took classes at 6 CCs .

Sarab88: So this professor offered to changed your grade if you would have done a few assignments over the summer? And you didn't do this because of laziness? Seems like you really have to get it together if you want to transfer to UCLA.

I know. I'm really beating myself up over it. I had no motivation whatsoever during my first year at CC and had no idea what to do with my life.
Now I'm motivated and I set goals for myself so I'm planning to do my best and work hard to get to UCLA. I can't let that one mistake hold me back.

The class is called Arch. 34. It's strange because they only offer it at my CC and not at my CC's sister school, which I also attend.
