Right now I'm a student at a Calfornia Community College. I decided to stay at CC for another year so I can have a chance to apply to UCLA (I couldn't apply for Fall 2008 because I didn't have enough units). My current GPA isn't that great. It is 3.05. I had the worst first year at Community College. My grades are 5 A's, 2 B's, 1 C and 1 F.

The F is in an architectural design class that I took on a whim because I was interested. It turns out that this class was the most difficult architecture class (no one advised me that I had to take the intro to acrchitecture classes before taking this one) and it being my first architecture class, I couldn't understand the concepts and the teacher failed me.

Taking the class again is a last resort because I don't know if I can make room in my schedule for it (I have to complete 5 honors classes and the pre-req's for English) and its only offered in the spring so the F will still be on my transcript when I apply.

I'm working hard this semester to raise my GPA before I apply this November. My dream is to go to UCLA. I am so determined to raise my GPA and am willing to do everything and anything I can to accomplish my goals.
I am also planning to join the Honors Program (TAP) and join the honor society Alpha Gamma Sigma. I was also a member of the Student Goverment. Currently I tutor English 6 hrs/week on the side (I am an English major)
If I successfully complete the Honors program and raise my GPA to at least a 3.5 will they look past the F? Or am I doomed?

First of all, the easiest way for you to raise your GPA is to turn that F into an A. However, if that architecture class doesn't relate to your major, your admission officers may overlook it. However, I highly recommend you find some way to retake the course in which you received an F.

Sorry, I should've included my major at the top instead of the bottom of my post.

I'm an English major.
The architecture class i failed doesn't relate to my major at all. Also, the class isn't on the IGETC. I'm not sure if that makes any difference

After thinking it over I am seriously considering re-taking the class. I just hope it's worth it.

Get an academic Renewal. If it doesn't affect your major they'll just take it off.

I took a photoclass for fun and for some odd reason I got a D (even though I got B's on all my work T_T) so I got academic renewal and they took it off and i didn't have to waste time and money retaking it.

I got into UCI as an english major with a 2.98 =] So just raise your grade to UCLA standards ^_^ Goodluck.

Tizzy-
Thank you for the idea!
I was just looking up my CC district's policy on academic renewal but it states that if I file for acaedmic renewal then the entire semester will be disregarded instead of just the individual course.
I really hope that's not the situation because I received 3 A's and 1 B that semester. I just want to get rid of that F.
I'm wondering if they will just take the F off my transcript? (it was an architecture class that has nothing to do with my major)

I'm wondering if they disregarded all of your grades that semester or just the D you received in your photo class?

That's what my CC's Policy said on Mine too. All my friends were lyke...Yeah you're gonna get your whole semester off!!

But I talked to my counsler and it just erases the GRADE and the GPA is reset to what it would be without the F. So if You got a 2.4 for that semester with the F, then once the F was gone it would turn into a 3.0. Or something along those lines.

Just talk to your counsler. They should figure out something for you. =] Exhaust all options! ^__^

My CC's counseling office is HORRIBLE with appointments! My counselor along with the others are always booked, but I'm definitely going to try and make an appointment ASAP.

I hope my CC will do the same for me and get rid of the F

I had a 2.85 that semester with the F and it would be really amazing if it could go up to a 3.4 or 3.5!

Now I'm getting really anxious/excited!

I'll post an update of what happens after my counseling appointment (which will probably be in two weeks since all the appointments are booked for now)

Holy crap...2 weeks? At my school you can only book that week, and you have to wait a week if it's full. I usually call really early in the morning on Mondays to get a spot. :D

O_o Feels lyke we're the only ones chatting, anywho, what CC do you go to?

Anywho, I go to Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College (Saddlback's sister school)

How about you?

I think my CC has the same system. You have to book it that week for an appointment the week after, but right now they're completely booked since the semester is ending. They said I have to call on Monday morning at 8 am in order to get an appointment. If you call any later than that , then they're always booked! CRAZY people!

P.s. Congrats on getting into UCI! I should've said that earlier. I hear they have a great English program :)

Oh, Thank you very much. I practically screamed wehn i got in. Thought I would have to go to CSULB. I go to OrangeCoastCollege. =] Do you have Aim...ppl might get annoyed at us :O!
