Hello!
I really appreciate any responses.
So, I’ve been taking classes in San Diego at their community colleges for a little over 2 years working toward a computer science degree. I go to school while I work full time so it’s taking longer than most. I finished all my required CSU GE courses and some other courses in computer science.
I went to a counselor a little bit ago and it was suggested that I get my associates for transfer because of how impacted computer science is in most schools.
So, my work sent me to the Bay Area recently… I will be here for 6 months, maybe more I’m not sure. I’ve signed up for the community colleges in the area and want to take classes. Some offer associates for transfer in computer science.
My question is, if I take courses that are part of a certain school’s associates degree, do they transfer to other schools if I change areas again? Or do I need to get the associates degree from that school? There are two community colleges, Foothill and De Anza, that both offer the associates with transfer, but the classes are different. Do I need to pick and stick to one school?
Do you think an associates is the right way to go?
Please let me know if you need more information to answer.
Thanks!!
What are you missing to complete an AA or AS at your original CC? Could you get any of those classes in online format through that CC to save yourself the headache of having multiple transcripts?
Most if not all of your CA CC credits should transfer to another CA CC given that you are within the same state system. If you expect to move back to your former residence, and finish your AA or AS at the original CC, find out which of the classes you might take ta the CCs near your current location can fulfill that place’s graduation requirements. Similarly, if your are close to graduating and would want to finish up in your new location instead, verify the transferability of your earlier credits so that you can minimize your time to completion. As for transferring from CA CC to university, which credits transfer and as what will depend on the receiving university. In CA there is a searchable database that will let you verify which courses are transferrable. Sorry I can’t recall the link or I’d include it here. Check the CA subforum of the Transfer forum for that.
Often if you complete a full AA or AS degree with a certain GPA you can be guaranted admission to a specific major because of a formal articulation ageeement between your CC and a specific university. So check each of the CCs that are workable for you to find out if articulation agreements exist for your major. That might be the deciding factor in where you dcide to complete your AA or AS degree. Even when there is not a guaranteed admission for a specific major, there may be guaranteed admission to a university, easier admission to a university, or guaranteed acceptance of your AA or AS as completing a university’s general education requirements. So work through those questions when you meet with the transfer advisor.
Wishing you all the best in your transfer process!
